Chapter 6 - The Paperwork of Ruin

The word brother-in-law dropped like a live grenade onto the black granite table.

Blair gasped, clutching the mahogany credenza behind her as if the room had suddenly tilted sideways.

"Arthur... that's a lie! That's a complete mischaracterization of an arms-length vendor agreement!"

Caleb reached into his manila folder and pulled out the second red-tabbed document, sliding it across the table to Victoria.

"State filing records for Apex Facility Logistics, registered to a residential address in Dublin, Ohio," Caleb said calmly.

"The registered agent is Gregory Whitman. Bank routing numbers for monthly service disbursements match an account with co-signatory access held by Blair Whitman."

Victoria stared down at the documents, her hands trembling as she read the names, the bank routing numbers, and the dates of transfer.

She looked up at Blair, her eyes flashing with a mixture of furious betrayal and deep, personal humiliation.

"You did this under my nose?" Victoria demanded, her voice shaking with rage.

"Every quarter, you told me facilities costs were rising because of supply chain inflation!"

"Victoria, please," Blair begged, her composure disintegrating into frantic tears.

"It was an operational contingency fund... we were going to reinvest the savings into the new campus expansion!"

Arthur Harwood didn't let her finish her excuse.

He tapped his cane once against the floor, a sharp wooden crack that echoed like a gavel.

"Security is already upstairs in your office, Blair. Your laptop is being imaged by state investigators, and your building pass was deactivated four minutes ago."
