Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Vance

Within forty-eight hours of their disastrous return, the financial dominoes began collapsing with terrifying speed.
Without Eleanor’s credit card covering the commercial storage unit, the facility manager initiated an immediate non-payment auction.
Ten thousand dollars worth of Vanessa’s vintage holiday decorations and designer furniture were liquidated for pennies on the dollar.
Next came the luxury car dealership, which dispatched two tow trucks to the driveway of Daniel’s leased townhouse.
Because Eleanor had canceled the recurring wire transfer, the lease was declared ninety days delinquent under default terms.
Daniel watched helplessly from his living room window as his sleek black SUV was winched onto the flatbed truck.
His neighbors stood on their front porches, whispering and pointing as the repo men drove away down the suburban street.
Inside the house, the arguments between Daniel and Vanessa grew louder, more toxic, and increasingly violent.
“This is your fault!” Vanessa screamed, throwing a ceramic coffee mug against the kitchen cabinets.
“You couldn't control your own mother! You let a senile old woman destroy my brother and take away our fortune!”
“My mother isn't senile!” Daniel roared back, slamming his fists onto the kitchen counter.
“Marcus is a criminal, Vanessa! You convinced me to forge my father’s name on legal instruments!”
“I am facing five years in federal prison because of you and your parasite brother!”
The doorbell rang, cutting their vicious shouting match in half.
Vanessa smoothed her clothes and marched toward the door, expecting an apologetic courier carrying a settlement offer from Eleanor.
Instead, she was greeted by a process server holding two thick blue manila envelopes.
“Vanessa Vance Bennett?” the young woman asked, checking her clipboard.
“Yes, what is this garbage?”
“You have been officially served with a civil RICO lawsuit filed on behalf of Eleanor Bennett for fraud, conversion, and emotional distress.”
The server handed her the first envelope, then extended the second toward Daniel.
“And Daniel Bennett, you are hereby served with a formal subpoena to testify before the county grand jury on Tuesday.”
Vanessa ripped open the envelope, her eyes scanning the itemized legal claims prepared by Mr. Harrison’s powerhouse firm.
Eleanor was not only suing to recover every dollar Marcus had attempted to steal through the title transaction.
She had also filed an accounting audit demanding full reimbursement for every auto loan, utility bill, and cash gift paid over seven years.
Under state law, financial assistance obtained through fraudulent misrepresentation could be legally reclaimed in full.
Total damages sought: one million eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
Vanessa sank down onto the hallway carpet, the legal documents fluttering from her trembling fingers.

The lavish lifestyle she had built on the backs of Arthur and Eleanor Bennett was not just ending.
It was being torn apart down to the studs.
