Chapter 4 - The Welcome Committee

The morning mist hung thick over Port Everglades as the massive cruise liner eased into terminal four.
Passengers lined the outer decks with rolling luggage, laughing and comparing sun tans from their seven-day voyage.
Vanessa led the way down the passenger gangway, complaining loudly about the humidity and the customs queues.
Behind her walked Marcus Vance, dressed in an expensive linen suit, nervously chewing on the filter of an unlit cigar.
Daniel followed quietly behind them, carrying four heavy bags while his two children complained about their dead tablets.
“Marcus, go hail the premium shuttle,” Vanessa ordered, pushing past a family with small children.
“I refuse to stand in line with common tourists after spending five thousand dollars on an ocean suite.”
Marcus took three steps toward the terminal exit before two uniformed federal marshals stepped squarely into his path.
Behind them stood Detective Miller and four armed officers from the Broward County Sheriff's Department.
“Marcus Vance?” the lead marshal asked, his badge gleaming under the bright fluorescent terminal lights.
Marcus froze, his tanned face instantly draining of all color.
“Yes? Is there an issue with my customs declaration?”
“You are under arrest pursuant to an active federal warrant for wire fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny of real property.”
Before Marcus could take another breath, the marshal spun him around and slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
The sound echoed through the crowded arrival terminal, bringing the bustling crowd to an abrupt, dead silence.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Vanessa shrieked, rushing forward and waving her hands wildly.
“Uncuff my brother this instant! Do you have any idea who our legal counsel is?”
Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of stamped legal documents from his jacket pocket.
“Mrs. Vanessa Bennett, I suggest you lower your voice and step back before you are charged with obstruction.”
He turned his gaze toward Daniel, who stood paralyzed with two heavy suitcases dangling from his limp hands.
“Daniel Bennett?”
Daniel’s knees buckled slightly, but Detective Miller grabbed his elbow, steadying him before placing him against the security railing.
“You are being detained as a material witness and co-conspirator in the fraudulent transfer of real estate belonging to Eleanor Bennett.”
Vanessa gasped, clutching her designer handbag against her chest as if she had been struck across the face.
“Eleanor? That crazy old bat called the police over a family dispute?”
“This isn't a family dispute, ma'am,” Detective Miller replied with icy professionalism.
“This is a felony conspiracy investigation involving the forged conveyance of a two-million-dollar residential estate.”
Passersby stopped to take out their phones, recording the spectacle of Vanessa screaming while Marcus was escorted away in chains.
Daniel looked around the crowded terminal, searching in vain for the familiar, comforting figure of his mother.
Whenever he had gotten into trouble in high school, whenever he bounced checks in his twenties, she had always been there.
She would arrive with coffee, sign the necessary paperwork, pay the damages, and wrap her arms around him.

But Eleanor was nowhere to be seen.
Only armed officers, flashing red lights, and the harsh click of handcuffs waiting for his hands.
