Chapter 5 - Evicted from an Empty Palace

Fourteen hours later, after posting emergency bail through a high-interest bondsman, Daniel and Vanessa pulled up to the lake house.

They had spent their remaining liquid cash securing Daniel’s temporary release on the condition he surrender his passport.

Marcus remained locked in a federal detention cell without bond due to his prior fraud warrants.

Vanessa’s hair was disheveled, her makeup smeared with angry tears as she slammed the SUV door shut.

“We’ll confront her right now,” Vanessa snarled, marching up the stone pathway toward the front door.

“She will march down to that courthouse, drop every single charge, and pay back our bail money before nightfall!”

Daniel followed weakly behind her, his head pounding from exhaustion and panic.

“Vanessa, look at the front lawn,” Daniel whispered, his voice trembling.

The hand-carved wooden sign bearing the name “The Bennett Retreat” had been removed from the front gate.

In its place stood a pristine brass plaque reading: “Private Residence of Dr. Robert Evans.”

Vanessa ignored the sign and pounded violently on the heavy oak front door.

“Eleanor! Open this door right now! You have humiliated us for the last time!”

Instead of his mother’s gentle footsteps, the door swung open to reveal an athletic, silver-haired man wearing gardening gloves.

A large German Shepherd sat calmly at his side, watching Vanessa with sharp, watchful eyes.

“Can I help you two?” Dr. Evans asked, his tone polite but entirely devoid of warmth.

“Where is Eleanor Bennett?” Vanessa demanded, trying to peer past his shoulder into the foyer.

“Get her out here right now! This is our family property!”

Dr. Evans crossed his arms, leaning casually against the doorframe.

“Mrs. Bennett vacated this property three days ago after completing a lawful, fully recorded cash transaction.”

“I am the sole legal owner of this home, and the deed is filed with the county registrar.”

Daniel felt the world tilt violently under his feet.

“She... she sold the house? But where are all my things? My childhood trophies? My furniture?”

Dr. Evans pointed toward a commercial storage receipt pinned to the entry console table.

“Mrs. Bennett hired professional packers to box every personal item belonging to her late husband and herself.”

“As for your remaining childhood items, they were cataloged, boxed, and delivered to the municipal thrift warehouse downtown.”

Vanessa shrieked in absolute fury, attempting to push past the doctor into the hallway.

“You can’t do this! We have renovation contracts pending on this estate! Our names are on the remodel plans!”

The German Shepherd let out a low, vibrating growl that vibrated through the floorboards.

Dr. Evans reached into his pocket and lifted a handheld smartphone already connected to the county emergency dispatcher.

“You have ten seconds to remove yourselves from my private driveway before I release my protection dog and press criminal trespass charges.”

Daniel grabbed Vanessa’s arm, pulling her backward with all his remaining strength.

“Vanessa, stop! Look inside! It’s gone! Everything is gone!”

Through the open doorway, Daniel could see the living room Arthur had paneled with white pine.

The antique rugs were missing; the family portraits were gone; the mantelpiece was completely bare.

His mother hadn't just left the house.

She had completely erased their presence from her world.
