Chapter 8 - The Awakening and the Reckoning

When I opened my eyes, the harsh glare of the recovery room ceiling made me wince. The rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor was the first sound that broke through the heavy sedative fog in my mind.
My hands immediately flew to my abdomen. It was flat, bound tightly with surgical dressings, and sore with a dull, throbbing ache.
Panic seized my chest. ""My baby..."" I croaked, my throat raw and parched.
""She's right here, Mara,"" a soft voice spoke.
I turned my head weakly toward the corner of the room.
Kendall was sitting in a vinyl hospital chair, holding a tiny, swaddled bundle against her chest. She was rocking gently, tears glistening on her cheeks, looking down at the bundle with reverence. Lacey was asleep on the adjacent cot, curled up under a rough hospital blanket.
A nurse stepped into the room with a gentle smile. ""She's awake. You did incredible, Mara. You gave birth to a healthy four-pound, eleven-ounce baby girl. Because of your quick arrival at the hospital, there was zero oxygen deprivation. Her lungs are functioning beautifully. She's a fighter.""
Kendall stood up carefully, supporting the infant's neck with absolute tenderness, and brought her over to my bedside. She placed the tiny bundle onto my chest.
I looked down at the tiny, wrinkled face, the shock of dark hair, the delicate fingers curled into tiny fists. She was breathing evenly, warm and safe against my skin. Tears spilled hot down my cheeks, soaking my hospital gown.
""Her name is Hope,"" I whispered.
""It suits her,"" Kendall smiled, wiping her eyes. ""She looks just like you.""
The quiet sanctuary of the room was suddenly shattered as the door swung open.
Andrew strode in, looking disheveled and frantic, his tie askew. Behind him stood a hospital security guard who looked thoroughly annoyed.
""Mara! Thank God!"" Andrew exclaimed, rushing toward the bed with open arms. ""I've been in the waiting room for six hours! They wouldn't let me back because these two kids told security I wasn't allowed in the room!""
Baby Hope stirred at the sudden volume of his voice, letting out a sharp, frightened wail.
""Keep your voice down,"" I said, my voice ice cold despite my physical weakness. ""And step back from this bed.""
""Mara, please,"" Andrew pleaded, ignoring my command. ""I was terrified for you! I know we had an awful fight, but we have a daughter now. We're a family. We can fix this. I called Whispering Pines—I canceled the payments to Evelyn! I called Harbor Glen—the boarding school is off! We can start completely fresh. I swear to you, I'll be the husband and father you deserve.""
""You don't get to fix this, Andrew,"" I said, holding Hope securely against my chest. ""You stole from me. You emotionally abused your daughters for three years to hide your own cowardice. You almost killed me and your child this morning because you were too selfish to tell the truth.""

""You can't take my daughter from me!"" he hissed, his mask slipping again, exposing the ugly desperation underneath.
""I won't have to,"" I replied calmly. ""While you were waiting outside, I had the head of hospital social services come in. I filed a full police report regarding the theft of fifteen thousand dollars from my estate, complete with digital bank statements. The detectives are waiting for you in the administrative lobby downstairs.""
