Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Martyr

The next morning, the front door clicked open at 7:30 AM.

Andrew walked into the foyer carrying a cardboard tray containing three iced coffees and a bag of fresh pastries from the upscale bakery downtown. He looked well-rested, confident, and wore an apologetic expression carefully designed to look remorseful yet dignified.

""Good morning,"" he called out softly toward the stairs, trying to project normal domestic warmth. ""I brought cinnamon rolls.""

I walked out of the kitchen, dressed in dark leggings and a thick sweater, holding the leather ledger and printouts of the wire transfers in my hand. I leaned against the doorframe, watching him set the coffee down on the hall table.

""You're awake early,"" he said, trying to read my guarded expression. ""Look, Mara, I did a lot of thinking at the hotel last night. I let my anxiety get the best of me. Harbor Glen was a foolish idea born out of sheer panic about finances and space. I'll call the school on Monday morning and request a full refund of the reservation fee. We can put this behind us.""

""Does Harbor Glen know that Evelyn is only ninety miles away from their campus?"" I asked quietly.

Andrew froze mid-motion. His hand stayed planted on the pastry box. His eyes slowly shifted toward the papers clutched in my fingers, and the mask of calculated remorse shattered into utter panic.

""Where did you get that?"" he whispered, his voice suddenly hoarse.

""Whispering Pines Recovery Center,"" I said, reciting the name slowly so every syllable landed like a hammer. ""You told me she took off with a boyfriend to Los Angeles. You told your daughters their mother didn't love them enough to stick around. But you've been sending her thousands of dollars every month. My mother’s inheritance money, Andrew. You stole my mother's legacy to pay for your ex-wife's private recovery suite.""

""Shut up!"" he hissed, his eyes darting frantically toward the staircase. ""Keep your voice down! The girls are sleeping!""

""No, they're not,"" a cold voice rang out from the top of the stairs.

Kendall was standing on the landing, wearing pajamas, gripping the wooden banister with white knuckles. Lacey was right behind her, peering down with wide, frightened eyes.

Andrew spun around, his breathing ragged. ""Kendall, please. It’s not what she's making it sound like. Your mother is sick. She was very sick three years ago, and she needed professional medical help!""

""You told us she hated us!"" Kendall screamed, stepping down the stairs with a fury that shook the entire foyer. ""You sat us down on the couch three years ago and told us Mom chose drugs and another man over us! You let us spend three years crying ourselves to sleep wondering what we did wrong! You made Lacey write letters on Mother’s Day that you pretended to mail into the void!""

Lacey collapsed onto the top step, burying her head in her knees, sobbing with a depth of anguish that ripped through the room.

""I had to protect you!"" Andrew yelled back, his composure completely disintegrating. ""She was an addict! She was unstable! If I told you where she was, you would have begged to see her, and she wasn't fit to be a mother! I paid for her treatment so she could get clean! I was trying to save her so she could come back to you one day!""

""Using my money?"" I demanded, stepping into his face. ""Using the money meant for my daughter's future? And what was your master plan, Andrew? Send Kendall to Wisconsin so you could quietly reintroduce her to Evelyn behind my back? Were you going to dump me once you drained my accounts dry and Evelyn got clean?""

Andrew stared at me, trapped like a rat in a corner. The silence that followed was damning. There was no defense. He had been planning an exit strategy the entire time.
