Chapter 7 - The Race Against Time

The drive to Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital was a blur of flashing traffic lights, searing contractions, and Kendall's steady, determined voice cutting through the fog of my agony.

""Stay with me, Mara. Keep breathing. In through your nose, out through your mouth, just like you showed Lacey on the meditation app,"" Kendall commanded, her hands gripping the steering wheel at ten and two. She drove with a precision that belied her age, navigating Saturday morning suburban traffic with fierce focus.

In the back seat, Lacey was holding my clammy hand with both of hers, tears streaming silently down her cheeks. ""You're going to be okay, Mara. The baby is going to be okay. Please stay awake.""

""I'm here,"" I choked out, a fresh wave of blinding pain arching my back. I could feel the baby's movements slowing down drastically. The terror that gripped me was worse than the physical pain. I had spent months planning her nursery, imagining her first laugh, picking out tiny yellow socks—I couldn't lose her now. Not after everything.

Kendall pulled into the emergency bay of the hospital, screeching to a halt right in front of the automated ambulance doors. She threw the car into park, jumped out, and started screaming for help.

""Emergency! My stepmother is in labor, she's bleeding, and she's thirty-four weeks pregnant!""

Within thirty seconds, the glass doors parted. Three triage nurses and an ER physician rushed out with a gurney. They lifted me onto the mattress, instantly cutting open my sweatpants to assess the bleeding.

""Placental abruption,"" the doctor announced grimly after feeling my rigid abdomen. ""Fetal heart rate is decelerating. We need an immediate emergency Cesarean section. Page Dr. Alcott in OB-GYN! Prep OR Three right now!""

The gurney was shoved through the double doors at a dead run. Ceiling lights blurred past me like a strobe. The sterile smell of iodine and rubbing alcohol filled my senses.

Kendall and Lacey ran alongside the gurney down the hallway until two security guards gently held them back at the surgical threshold.

""You can't come past this point, girls,"" a nurse said softly.

""Please!"" Kendall cried out, reaching past the guard’s arm to touch my fingertips one last time. ""Tell her we love her! Tell her she has to come back with our sister!""

""I love you both!"" I managed to scream before the double doors swung shut, severing us.

Inside the operating room, everything moved at lightning speed. An oxygen mask was strapped over my face. Cold antiseptic was splashed across my belly. Needles were inserted into my veins, and the anesthesiologist leaned over me, speaking with calm urgency.

""Count backward from ten for me, Mara. We're taking care of your little girl.""

""Ten... nine... eight...""

The bright surgical lights dissolved into velvety blackness.
