Chapter 5 - Sleeping in a Two-Star Motel

Night fell over Houston like a heavy, suffocating blanket. Rain began to pound against the cracked asphalt of Highway 290, turning the neon signs of roadside diners and budget truck stops into blurry streaks of yellow and red.

Inside a cramped, dingy room at a two-star motel near the industrial freight district, Kristen sat huddled on the corner of a stained queen mattress, weeping hysterically into her hands. The room smelled of stale cigarette smoke, damp industrial carpet, and cheap disinfectant. Her four luxury suitcases were piled haphazardly near the door, blocking a drafty window that rattled every time an eighteen-wheeler roared past on the highway.

""Look at this place!"" she screamed, gesturing wildly at the chipped particle-board nightstand and the buzzing fluorescent light fixture overhead. ""There is water leaking from the bathroom ceiling! The sheets feel damp! I have never set foot in a disgusting rat hole like this in my entire life! My parents won't even answer my phone calls because your family made us the laughingstock of the entire city!""

Across the tiny room, Trevor sat hunched on a rickety wooden chair, his head buried deep in his trembling hands. His custom designer shirt was rumpled, stained with grease from a cheap drive-thru burger, and his hair was an unwashed, greasy mess.

Every ten minutes, his smartphone buzzed against the table with devastating updates:

Chase Bank Alert: Personal checking account overdrawn by $14,250.

American Express: Centurion card privileges suspended due to canceled guarantor line.

Message from Attorney Davis: Cannot represent you against Gloria Sutter without an immediate $25,000 cash retainer.

Text from Bradley (Best Friend): Dude, cancel our golf trip to Cabo. Everyone saw the eviction video on Instagram. Don't call me for a while.

""Trevor, do something!"" Kristen wailed, throwing a plastic motel ice bucket against the wall, where it cracked into pieces. ""Call her! Get on your knees and beg her! Cry, apologize, tell her you were drunk, tell her you had a mental breakdown—say whatever you have to say to fix this! We don't have enough money in our private accounts to pay for this room past tomorrow morning!""

Trevor slowly lifted his head. His eyes were hollow, bloodshot, and rimmed with dark, bruised circles of pure exhaustion. For the first time in his thirty years of pampered existence, the terrifying weight of reality pressed down upon his chest like an iron anvil.

He picked up his phone with a shaking hand and dialed my number.

The number you have dialed is currently unavailable or has restricted incoming calls. Please try your call again later.

He dialed again. The same automated female voice answered, flat and unreachable.

He opened his messaging application and frantically began typing:

Mom, please pick up. I’m so sorry. I swear I didn’t mean what happened last night. Kristen and I are sleeping in a disgusting motel on the freeway. We have no food, no credit cards, and nowhere to go. Please don’t destroy my life over one mistake. I am your only son. You promised Dad on his deathbed that you would always take care of me. Please call me back. I need help.

He pressed send.

May you like

A tiny gray exclamation point immediately appeared beneath the text bubble: Message not delivered. You have been blocked by this contact.

Trevor let out a choked, desperate sound and dropped the phone face-down onto the cheap carpet. He pulled his knees up against his chest and, for the first time since he was a frightened eight-year-old boy lost in a department store, he buried his face in his arms and began to sob uncontrollably.
