Chapter 2 - Kristen’s Fake World Crumples

Outside the wrought-iron gates of 4120 River Oaks Boulevard, neighborhood curtains were twitching. Wealthy socialites walked their pampered French bulldogs past the property, whispering behind manicured hands as three enormous commercial haulers and two private security cruisers effectively barricaded the wide stone driveway.
Inside the two-story foyer, Kristen stood paralyzed on the sweeping spiral staircase, clutching her tiny Pomeranian dog against her silk designer robe. Down on the checkered marble floor, two burly men in black tactical utility uniforms were methodically taping orange inventory tags onto the imported furniture.
""Don't touch that mirror!"" Kristen shrieked, her voice cracking as tears carved deep tracks through her expensive foundation. ""That is Venetian glass imported from Milan! Trevor, do something! Stand up like a real man and throw these trespassers into the street! Why are you just standing there trembling?""
Trevor stood in the center of the grand entryway, his face utterly drained of blood. His designer phone was clutched tightly in his hand, his thumb furiously scrolling through digital bank records, county appraisal districts, and deed registries. Every search result yielded the exact same horrifying truth: Owner of Record: Cedarline Capital LLC. Transfer Status: Sold / Closed.
""It's real..."" Trevor stammered, staring blindly at the phone screen as cold sweat soaked through his tailored linen shirt. ""She actually did it. She owned every single square foot. The house, the guest lodge, the swimming pavilion, even the commercial HVAC system. We don't own the property, Kristen. We never owned it.""
""What do you mean we don't own it?!"" Kristen lunged down the final steps, grabbing Trevor by the collar of his shirt and shaking him violently. ""You told me your father left you this estate in his trust! You told my father before we got married that you held seven million dollars in personal Texas real estate equity! My parents bought us five-hundred-thousand dollars worth of custom furnishings based on that promise! You told me that withered old woman was just a dependent relative who lived in the suburbs on your charity!""
""I thought she would eventually put my name on the deed!"" Trevor shouted back, pushing her hands away in sudden, wild desperation. ""She always gave me whatever I demanded! Every car, every credit card payoff, every luxury vacation! She never pushed back! How was I supposed to know she kept the master title buried inside an offshore corporate shell?""
The head of the security enforcement team, a massive veteran officer named Marcus, stepped forward and tapped his clipboard against his tactical belt.

""Mr. and Mrs. Sutter, your sixty-minute grace period began precisely twenty-two minutes ago,"" Marcus announced with flat, emotionless professionalism. ""Per the express instructions of the new buyer and the managing trustee, you are permitted to collect personal clothing, basic toiletries, laptops, and essential legal identification. All luxury fixtures, original artwork, high-end electronics, and major interior furniture purchased under Cedarline Capital's commercial credit cards remain secured on the premises under lock and key. If you are not past the outer gates by twelve-thirty sharp, we will physically escort you to the curb and leave your personal bags on the public sidewalk.""
Kristen let out a desperate, guttural sob, collapsing onto a velvet ottoman that was immediately marked with a bright yellow eviction tag.
