Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

While my son and his hysterical wife scrambled through their walk-in closets tossing clothes into cheap nylon duffel bags, I sat quietly in the back of a luxury towncar parked across from the downtown high-rise that housed Apex Logistics.
Apex Logistics was a mid-tier regional freight brokerage company that Trevor had founded four years earlier. He loved parading himself around Houston networking circles as a self-made logistics mogul. He wore three-thousand-dollar Italian suits, leased an exotic European sports car, and bragged on social media about his innate business genius and aggressive hustle culture.
What he never posted on LinkedIn was the financial reality beneath the curtain: I had personally co-signed the company's operating credit lines, put up two commercial warehouses as collateral, and instructed my private accounting team to discreetly absorb his monthly cash deficits whenever his reckless spending threatened payroll.
I smoothed down my tailored gray blazer, checked the dark sunglasses hiding my swollen left eye, and stepped out of the vehicle. Arthur Miller walked directly beside me, carrying two heavy leather briefcases packed with formal foreclosure notices and corporate financial guarantees.
We rode the brass elevator up to the thirty-second floor. When the double glass doors slid open, Trevor’s executive assistant looked up in surprise.
""Mrs. Sutter? Good morning! Trevor isn't in the office today—he called in saying there was an unexpected emergency at home—""
""I know exactly where he is, Amanda,"" I replied smoothly, walking past her desk without breaking stride. ""Assemble the department directors, the chief financial officer, and the head of human resources in the main boardroom immediately.""
Five minutes later, seven high-level executives sat nervously around the frosted glass table. Frank Kowalski, the veteran CFO whom I had personally recruited to keep Trevor out of prison for tax negligence, looked at my bruised face with visible alarm.
""Gloria... dear God, what happened to your lip?"" Frank asked in a low, furious murmur. ""Who did that to you?""
""That is a personal matter being handled through criminal channels, Frank,"" I answered, removing my sunglasses and placing them precisely on the polished glass. ""We are here today to discuss Apex Logistics. Specifically, the fact that Cedarline Capital has officially terminated its five-million-dollar corporate line of credit as of nine o'clock this morning.""
A collective gasp echoed across the room. The sales director went instantly pale, leaning back in his swivel chair as if he had been slapped.
""Wait, Mrs. Sutter,"" Frank stammered, frantically opening his financial laptop. ""Without Cedarline's credit backing, our cash liquidity drops to zero by Friday afternoon! We have three major shipping carriers demanding wire payments for regional fuel surcharges, and executive payroll is due in forty-eight hours! If Trevor's personal holding company pulls the liquidity guarantee, the entire firm will breach its statutory covenants!""
""Apex is not Trevor's personal holding company, Frank,"" Arthur Miller interjected, sliding an official stack of legal documents across the center of the table. ""Ninety percent of the voting preferred stock and one hundred percent of the commercial asset liens are held by Gloria Sutter's living trust. Trevor was granted an executive operating license contingent upon maintaining fiduciary integrity and ethical family leadership. That license was formally revoked this morning due to extreme personal misconduct and financial insolvency.""

I stood up from the head of the table, looking at the dedicated employees who had worked tirelessly while my son played the role of an untouchable corporate prince.
""Frank, you will immediately freeze Trevor's corporate debit cards, revoke his administrative access to company bank accounts, and terminate his luxury vehicle stipend,"" I instructed calmly. ""Then, you will issue a formal wire transfer from my private reserve to cover all employee salaries and vendor invoices in full. Apex will continue operating under new professional management. Trevor Sutter no longer has an office, a salary, or an executive title in this building.""
