Chapter 9 - Hard Truths and New Boundaries

Martha let Corey weep until the storm inside him had passed. She handed him a handkerchief, watched him wipe his face, and waited until he had regained his composure and sat back up on the sofa. The room was bathed in the soft violet glow of the island twilight.

""Forgiveness is free, Corey,"" Martha said firmly, her tone steady and maternal. ""Trust, however, is an expensive commodity that has to be earned back dollar by dollar, day by day. I love you because you are my son. Arthur and I poured our souls into you. But love does not mean I will allow myself to be a punching bag for your convenience.""

""I understand, Mom,"" Corey whispered earnestly. ""I'm ready to do whatever it takes. Even if you never want to see Callie's family again.""

""I will never spend another minute in Trevor Burchett’s presence,"" Martha stated plainly. ""She is a hollow, bitter woman who uses cruelty to mask her own insecurities. But Callie is your wife. You made vows to her. If you want your marriage to survive, the two of you have fundamental work to do, completely separated from her mother’s toxic influence.""

There was a soft knock at the front door. Corey stood up, startled. Martha motioned for him to stay seated and walked to the door herself.

Standing on the porch was Callie. She was alone. Her designer clothes were rumpled, her mascara was smudged from crying, and she had walked the three-quarters of a mile from the resort security gate in the humid evening heat. She looked terrified, humble, and completely stripped of the arrogant posturing she had displayed for years.

""Mrs. Vance,"" Callie whispered, her voice trembling. ""I... I walked up here. The guard said you might not see me, but I begged him to let me walk. Please... can I say something to you?""

Martha studied the young woman. For the first time, Callie wasn't hiding behind Trevor's shadow, and she wasn't demanding executive privileges.

""You may come in, Callie,"" Martha said calmly.

Callie stepped inside, seeing Corey seated on the sofa. She didn't look at the expensive artwork or the sprawling ocean view visible through the rear windows. She walked directly toward Martha, stopped two paces away, and bowed her head.

""I didn't come to ask for rooms, and I didn't come to ask for Corey's inheritance,"" Callie said, her voice shaking with genuine remorse. ""My father left for the airport an hour ago. He told my mother that he was filing for legal separation the moment he landed in San Diego. Seeing my parents' marriage fall apart today made me realize what kind of monster I was turning into. I was copying my mother’s bitterness, her obsession with judging people, and her disgusting sense of entitlement.""

Callie looked up, tears streaming down her cheeks. ""I liked that Facebook comment. I laughed when my mother insulted you in the lobby. I forged your name because I thought we were entitled to your hard work. It was disgusting, dishonest, and unforgivable. Corey didn't defend you because I bullied him into keeping my mother happy. If Corey divorces me tomorrow, I deserve it. But I couldn't leave this island without looking you in the face and telling you how truly sorry and ashamed I am.""
