Chapter 5 - Whispers Across the Island

News travels fast in Maui, especially among the tight-knit hospitality community. By the following afternoon, word had spread across the coast about the entitled family who had tried to scam an executive family discount at Seawind Bluff and ended up verbally abusing the resort’s founding owner at the front desk.

Trevor, determined to salvage her anniversary and prove her social standing, spent the entire morning calling high-end restaurants in Wailea to book a private anniversary celebration. But every time she gave the name Burchett, the response was identical: completely booked, private events only, or an abrupt reservation cancellation due to ""capacity restrictions."" David and the local hospitality network had quietly ensured that rude, fraudulent patrons were given zero VIP treatment anywhere on the south shore.

Desperate to escape the suffocating heat of the budget motel, Callie convinced Corey to drive her back toward Seawind Bluff under the guise of an apology. In reality, Callie was still obsessed with the sudden revelation that her mother-in-law was a multimillionaire.

""Corey, you don't understand,"" Callie said urgently as they navigated the coastal highway in their cramped rental sedan. ""If your mother owns that entire property, she has trusts, land holdings, and equity worth tens of millions of dollars! Why did she let Arthur leave you with just a standard life insurance payout while she kept everything? You're her only child! Legally, you should be a partner in that resort!""

Corey gripped the steering wheel, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached. ""Callie, stop talking. Just stop.""

""I will not stop!"" she snapped, fixing her makeup in the sun visor mirror. ""My mother was humiliated yesterday! She was put in a cheap motel on her fortieth anniversary because your mother threw an ego trip over a simple discount code! If your mom had just been gracious and welcomed us, we would all be sitting poolside drinking mai tais right now. We need to go over there, make nice, apologize for the misunderstanding, and get her to put us in the suites. It’s what families do!""

""A misunderstanding?"" Corey suddenly barked, slamming his hand against the wheel and causing Callie to jump. ""You stole her employee discount code, Callie! You told the reservations desk she approved it when she didn't even know we were flying to the island! You and your mother posted publicly that she wasn't invited to our vacation because she was 'the hotel clerk'! You treated my mother like garbage, and I let you do it!""

""Don't you dare yell at me!"" Callie screamed back. ""You didn't care about your mother either! You're the one who told me she was boring and lived a simple life! You're the one who didn't want to spend four hours driving out to see her! Don't act like a saint now just because she has money!""

The car fell into a suffocating silence. Corey stared through the windshield, the truth of Callie's words piercing through his defenses. She was right about one thing: he couldn't put all the blame on his wife and mother-in-law. He had been an active participant in neglecting his mother. He had enabled their snobbery because it was easier than standing up for the woman who raised him.

They pulled up to the gated security entrance of Seawind Bluff. The guard stepped out of the booth, clipboard in hand.

""Names, please?""

""Corey Vance. I'm Martha Vance's son.""

The guard looked down at a memo sheet, then looked up with a polite, professional smile. ""I'm sorry, Mr. Vance. Mrs. Vance has left instructions that she is currently in executive meetings all day and is not receiving personal visitors on property. You are welcome to leave a written message, but you cannot proceed past the gate.""
