Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

""Caroline..."" Brandon took a hesitant step toward her, holding his hands out in a desperate plea. ""Sweetheart, don't listen to him. Your dad is framing this to break us up. He’s always hated me! He’s trying to control you like he always does!""

Caroline didn't move. She stood by the glass door, looking at Brandon as if she were seeing him for the very first time. The illusions of the last six years—the handsome, ambitious college boy, the promising corporate career, the charming husband—seemed to peel away, revealing the hollow, selfish parasite beneath.

""You told me you were working late in Cleveland every Thursday,"" Caroline said, her voice barely louder than a whisper, but vibrating with absolute devastation. ""I sat home alone making casseroles, worrying that you were working yourself to exhaustion for our family.""

She walked slowly toward the counter, her eyes locked on the photograph of Brandon kissing Victoria's cheek at the resort. She touched the glossy paper with a trembling finger.

""That’s the bracelet you told me your mother gave you as a family heirloom to pass down to our future daughter,"" she said. She looked up at Brandon, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. ""You stole my dad's money to buy jewelry for another woman, and then you laughed while your father humiliated him in our dining room.""

""Caroline, listen to reason,"" Richard interjected smoothly, attempting to salvage the wreckage. ""This is a private family matter. We can resolve this internally without lawyers or police. Brandon made a youthful mistake, yes, but think of the Prescott name. Think of your social standing in this town! If you cooperate with your father's legal witch hunt, you’ll be a penniless divorcee living in shame.""

Caroline turned her gaze toward Richard. For the first time in her life, I saw my late wife Margaret’s fiery, uncompromising spirit flare in our daughter's eyes.

""My name isn't Prescott, Richard,"" Caroline said with chilling composure. ""My name is Bennett. And my father built this business with his bare hands while you built your entire reputation on lies, bad loans, and stolen money.""

She reached into her purse, pulled off her diamond wedding ring—a ring I had paid for when Brandon claimed his trust fund was temporarily locked—and threw it directly at Brandon’s chest. It bounced off his jacket and clattered across the oily concrete floor, rolling until it stopped against the tire of the Chevy truck.

""Get out of my father's shop,"" Caroline said. ""And get out of my house.""

""Your house?"" Brandon sneered, the desperate facade dropping entirely, replaced by vicious malice. ""That house is in my name too, you pathetic little mouse! You can’t throw me out! I’ll sell that property out from under you, take half of everything your daddy ever gave you, and leave you with nothing!""

""Actually, Brandon, you won't,"" Frank Miller's booming voice announced as he stepped through the office door holding a stack of stamped court orders.

Frank handed a blue-backed legal document to Brandon. ""This is an emergency order of protection and an immediate asset freeze issued by the Franklin County Common Pleas Court. Due to credible evidence of felony grand theft, wire fraud, and identity theft, you are barred from entering the premises of the marital residence. Furthermore, Mr. Walter Bennett has formally exercised his co-signer buyout clause. The house title has been placed into receivership pending criminal trial.""

Brandon stared at the papers, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

Two Millbrook police cruisers pulled up outside, their red and blue lights flashing against the snow. Chief of Police Dave Higgins walked in, accompanied by two armed deputies.

""Brandon Prescott? Richard Prescott?"" Higgins asked, unhooking two pairs of handcuffs from his utility belt. ""We have warrants for your arrest regarding grand theft, bank fraud, and falsification of state financial instruments. Put your hands behind your backs.""
