Chapter 3 - The Cold Shoulder

On Saturday morning, Millbrook woke up to three inches of crisp, powdery snow. The bell above the front door of Bennett Automotive chimed around ten o'clock. I was under the hood of a 2018 Chevy Silverado, replacing an alternator, when heavy boots echoed across the concrete floor.
I slid out from beneath the truck, wiping grease from my calloused hands with a red rag.
Richard Prescott stood there, dressed in a tailored wool overcoat, leather driving gloves, and an expensive cashmere scarf. He looked completely out of place against the backdrop of hydraulic lifts, tire racks, and oil drums. His smile was smooth, practiced, and thoroughly patronizing.
""Morning, Walter,"" Richard said, stepping around an oil pan with visible disgust. ""Quite a chill in the air today. Thought we might have a private word, man to man.""
""You're tracking snow onto my clean shop floor, Richard,"" I replied without looking up from my work. ""Say what you came to say and get out.""
Richard chuckled, though the sound was thinner and tighter than it had been at the Thanksgiving dinner table. ""Look, Walter, about Thursday. Brandon was out of line. Young men have too much testosterone sometimes, a couple of beers in them, they get rowdy. He feels terrible about it. Elaine and I told him he owes you an apology.""
""Is that why Brandon sent you instead of coming himself?"" I asked, tossing the rag onto a workbench.
""Brandon is under an immense amount of stress,"" Richard said smoothly, taking a step closer and lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. ""He’s closing a massive commercial development deal with my firm. But right now, we’ve hit a temporary liquidity snag. Caroline told us you shut off the emergency card, and our bank rep called this morning saying there's an administrative hold placed on the home equity line.""
I stared at him, watching his eyes dart across the garage. He wasn't here to apologize. He was here because the bank had just contacted him about my fraud report.
""That wasn't an administrative hold, Richard. That was a criminal fraud freeze,"" I said bluntly. ""Your son forged my signature on a $120,000 loan and funneled the cash directly into your shell company.""
The polished smile instantly vanished from Richard’s face. His jaw clenched, and the veins in his temple pulsed beneath his manicured skin.
""Be very careful what you accuse people of, Walter,"" Richard hissed, dropping the friendly patriarch persona completely. ""You’re an aging mechanic. You don’t understand how modern venture finance works. That money was invested in high-yield commercial paper. It was going to benefit Caroline and your future grandchildren. If you blow the whistle on this, the bank will accelerate the note, the house will go into foreclosure, and your daughter will be out on the street with ruined credit.""
""Then she can come home to her old room,"" I said, stepping right up into his personal space. I was sixty-four, but forty years of pulling wrenches and lifting engine blocks meant I was built like an oak tree. Richard instinctively stepped back. ""My daughter lived in a modest home before she met your son, and she never had to commit felonies to survive.""
""You're making a catastrophic mistake,"" Richard warned, his voice shaking with suppressed rage. ""I have friends on the town council, in the county zoning board, and at the First Commonwealth Bank. You think you can embarrass the Prescott family in this town? I will have the environmental inspectors shutting this dirty garage down by Monday afternoon for soil contamination.""
""Try it,"" I said, pointing a grease-stained finger toward the door. ""Get off my property, Richard. Before I forget my manners and kick your chair out from under you.""
Richard glared at me, adjusted his coat with trembling hands, and practically sprinted back out into the snow toward his luxury sedan. As his car sped away, leaving black tire tracks in the slush, my cell phone rang again.
It was Caroline. She was sobbing hysterically.

""Dad! What did you do? The sheriff just served Brandon with a subpoena at our front door! Brandon is screaming, breaking things, and he says you're trying to destroy our lives! Please, Dad, stop this!""
""Caroline,"" I said, my heart aching at the sound of her tears. ""Pack a bag and come to my house right now. If you want to know the truth about the man you married, you need to see what I have on my table.""
