Chapter 5 - The Showdown at the Shop

Monday morning arrived gray and bitter cold. The snow had turned to gray slush along the curbs of Millbrook. I was at the shop by six, brewing a fresh pot of black coffee and organizing the legal folders Frank had prepared. At eight o'clock sharp, Tommy Ramirez walked through the side door, setting a thick manila envelope on my desk.
""Everything's inside,"" Tommy said, tipping his cap. ""Photographs from the resort in Gatlinburg, hotel folios under Brandon’s name, and credit card slips matching your emergency account. It's an open-and-shut case.""
I hadn't even finished reading the first surveillance summary when the front door of the customer lounge slammed open with a violent shudder.
Brandon stormed in, followed closely by Richard. Brandon’s eyes were bloodshot, his hair disheveled, and his coat unbuttoned despite the freezing wind outside. He looked like a cornered animal, furious and terrified all at once.
""You old son of a bitch!"" Brandon bellowed, slamming both palms down on the front service counter. ""You filed a police report? The bank froze all my accounts! My corporate credit card was declined at breakfast, and my branch manager told me my name is flagged for grand larceny!""
Richard stepped forward, his face pale, holding up a trembling hand. ""Walter, call off your lawyer immediately. You don't realize the disaster you’re creating. First Commonwealth Bank has initiated a forensic audit on Buckeye Asset Holdings. If this goes public, my firm will collapse before the end of the week!""
I calmly stepped out from behind the counter, holding the thick manila envelope Tommy had brought.
""Your firm is already collapsed, Richard,"" I said, my voice cutting through their panic like a cold blade. ""You're living on borrowed time and stolen money. You used my daughter's credit to pay off your illegal trading debts.""
Brandon lunged toward me, his face twisted in rage. ""You ruined everything! Caroline is my wife! What’s hers is mine, and what’s yours belongs to her anyway! You’re sixty-four years old! You should be handing your assets over to the next generation instead of hoarding every dollar like a miserable miser!""
""Is that why you bought this, Brandon?""
I reached into the envelope, pulled out an eight-by-ten glossy photograph, and slapped it onto the counter between us.
It was a crystal-clear image of Brandon sitting on the patio of a luxury lakeside restaurant, laughing as he fastened a platinum diamond bracelet onto the wrist of Victoria Vance. Below the photo was the merchant receipt bearing my credit card number and Brandon's initials.
Brandon froze. The color instantly drained from his face, leaving him looking sickly green under the shop's fluorescent lights.
""Where... where did you get that?"" Brandon stammered, stepping back as if the paper were on fire.
""I have eight more files just like it,"" I said, staring directly into his eyes. ""Weekend trips, hotel rooms, expensive dinners, all charged to my account while Caroline stayed home, couponing groceries because you told her money was tight.""
Richard grabbed his son's arm, staring at the photograph in horror. ""Brandon, you idiot... you put her on Walter's card?""
""She wanted something nice!"" Brandon yelled defensively, his voice cracking with desperate hysteria. ""She’s the commissioner's daughter! If I didn't keep her happy, the zoning permit for the commercial park wouldn't go through!""
""The zoning permit is dead, Brandon,"" a soft, trembling voice said from the doorway.

We all turned. Standing in the entrance of the shop was Caroline. She was wearing her old winter coat, her eyes swollen and red from crying. She held a duplicate copy of the loan documents Frank Miller had couriered to her house an hour earlier.
She had heard every single word.
