Chapter 6 - The Paperwork Guillotine

Daniel let out a loud, mocking laugh that sounded hollow and frantic in the quiet hospital corridor.

"Stripped my name? Don't be ridiculous, Claire! In Massachusetts, a legal husband is automatically presumed the biological father on the birth record!"

Richard Hayes, Daniel’s attorney, stepped forward, clearing his throat nervously while clutching a leather trial briefcase.

"Mrs. Pierce, my client is correct. Any unilateral modification of the birth registry requires a formal paternity proceeding in probate court."

"Then you'll be delighted to review this morning's probate docket, Mr. Hayes," a crisp, razor-sharp voice announced from the elevator lobby.

Walking toward us was Eleanor Vance, the city's most formidable appellate litigator and my late father's personal legal counsel.

She wore an elegant charcoal suit, carrying a certified red-stamped decree bearing the golden seal of the Commonwealth.

Behind her walked two uniformed marshals from the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department.

"Good morning, Richard," Eleanor said pleasantly, handing Hayes a set of court-ordered filings.

"Judge O'Connor signed an emergency ex-parte order at seven-thirty this morning, based on overwhelming forensic evidence of marital fraud and criminal conspiracy."

Daniel’s face began to pale as he watched his lawyer rapidly scan the documents.

"What does it say, Richard?" Daniel snapped, grabbing the attorney’s arm.

"Richard, answer me!"

"It's... it's a complete suspension of marital presumption," Hayes stammered, his legal confidence instantly evaporating.

"The court accepted electronic text logs between you and Vanessa Bennett showing that you intended to use fraudulent medical evaluations to seize trust assets."

Eleanor Vance stepped directly into Daniel’s personal space, looking him up and down with clinical disgust.

"We also filed an emergency freeze on all accounts associated with Pierce Logistics, Daniel. Under the original terms of your business seed loan seven years ago, the Bennett Trust holds a first-position security lien on every single asset your firm owns."

"You can't do that!" Daniel shrieked, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria.

"That loan was a gift from Claire's father when we got married!"

"My father never gave gifts to thieves, Daniel," I said, holding Thomas’s arm for support.

"He gave you a conditional mortgage, and you defaulted the second you laid hands on my sister and stole corporate dividends."

Eleanor turned to the two sheriff's marshals waiting beside the corridor wall.

"Deputies, please serve Mr. Pierce with the formal restraining order and the grand jury subpoena for commercial wire fraud."

The senior marshal stepped forward, slapping a thick packet of white legal papers hard against Daniel’s chest.

"Daniel Pierce, you are officially served. You are ordered to stay five hundred yards away from Claire Pierce and Maya Bennett at all times. Any violation will result in immediate felony remand."

Daniel stared at the papers in his shaking hands, looking around frantically at the hospital staff, the patients, and the executives who had accompanied him.

Not a single person would meet his eyes.

The two administrative directors who had arrived with him quietly backed into the service stairwell, desperate to distance themselves from the radioactive scandal.

"You're destroying me, Claire!" Daniel whispered, his knees trembling as the reality of his ruin crashed over him.

"I have nothing left without those accounts!"

"You had a wife, a daughter, and a family that would have died for you, Daniel," I replied quietly, looking him dead in the eye.

"Now you just have what you earned."

Thomas stepped between us, his massive frame cutting off Daniel's view of me forever.

"Get out of this hospital, Pierce," Thomas growled softly.

"Before I decide that court orders aren't enough."

Daniel turned on his heel and fled down the hallway, clutching his useless papers, stumbling blindly into the elevator as the doors slid shut.
