Chapter 1 - The Code Blue Whisper

The telemetry monitor above my bed began chirping with a sharp, frantic rhythm.

Nurse Sarah didn't take her eyes off the blood pressure cuff inflating painfully against my swollen bicep.

The digital display blinked in harsh amber numbers: one hundred and eighty-four over one hundred and twelve.

"Her pressure is spiking," Sarah called out through the doorway to the triage team.

"Get Dr. Keller in here right now, and prep an IV of magnesium sulfate."

My chest felt crushed beneath an invisible weight, every breath burning like inhaling coarse sand.

Outside my closed room, muffled voices argued in the fluorescent hallway.

Daniel was trying to use his smooth, corporate persuasion on the floor supervisor, insisting that his wife was simply having a hysterical breakdown.

Vanessa was chiming in, her voice shrill with fake tears, claiming I had tripped over my own hospital gown and struck the wall by accident.

"Don't listen to them, Mrs. Pierce," Sarah whispered gently, sliding an IV catheter into the back of my bruised hand with seasoned precision.

"I saw the handprints on your wrist. I already took photographs for the administrative medical-legal file."

A cold shudder ran through my body as the magnesium hit my bloodstream, sending a burning wave of heat through my veins.

"They're going to try to take me out of here," I gasped, tears burning behind my eyes.

"Daniel has powerful friends on the hospital board. He always makes people believe him."

Sarah secured the IV line with medical tape and looked down at me with fierce, unwavering clarity.

"He doesn't own this floor, Claire. And he certainly doesn't own the person who just called dispatch."

I stared at her through the haze of medication.

"What call?"

"Before I came into your room," Sarah said softly, leaning closer so only I could hear, "our charge nurse, Elena, saw that man grab your arm in the corridor. Elena grew up on the north side of Boston."

My breath caught in my throat.

The north side was Bennett territory.

"Elena recognized your maiden name on the admission chart," Sarah continued, checking the baby's fetal monitor.

"She called the direct private line of Bennett Heavy Marine Logistics ten minutes ago."

My heart hammered so hard against my ribs that the cardiac alarm squealed.

"No... they haven't spoken to me in seven years. Daniel told me they never wanted to see me again after our wedding."

Sarah shook her head slowly, adjusting the oxygen cannula in my nose.

"Whoever answered that phone didn't sound like a stranger who forgot you, Mrs. Pierce. The man on the line said three words before he hung up: Lock the doors."
