Chapter 4 - The Emergency Delivery

The sudden quiet in my room was shattered when the door flew open.

I turned my head weakly against the pillow, my vision blurry from the magnesium drip and the blinding headache.

A massive shadow filled the doorway, followed by the familiar, broad shoulders that used to carry me on the docks when I was eight years old.

"Claire-bear," a rough, broken voice whispered through the gloom.

My breath stopped in my throat.

"Thomas...?" I choked out, fresh tears burning my cheeks.

Thomas crossed the room in two strides, falling to his knees beside my hospital bed, his large, rough hands gently cupping my bruised wrist.

Behind him, Marcus and Gabriel stepped inside, their imposing faces crumbling into raw, protective grief as they looked at my pale, swollen face.

"We're here, baby girl," Thomas murmured, pressing his forehead against my trembling knuckles.

"We're right here. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again."

"Daniel told me... he told me you threw away my letters," I wept, gripping his fingers with all the strength left in my aching body.

"He said you told him I was a traitor for marrying into his family."

Marcus reached out, gently wiping the hair from my sweating forehead with a surprisingly tender touch.

"Daniel intercepted every call, Claire," Marcus said, his voice thick with unshed tears.

"He had his firm's IT department blackhole our domains. We went to your house three years ago, and he had police issue a restraining order claiming you were terrified of us."

Before I could answer, the door swung open again, and Dr. Keller rushed in with four surgical nurses.

"We have to move now!" Dr. Keller announced, checking the fetal heart monitor which was dipping into dangerous decelerations.

"Her blood pressure is critical, and the baby is in distress. We're going straight to operating room three for an emergency Cesarean section!"

Panic surged through my chest, but Thomas rose to his feet, keeping his hand locked in mine.

"I'm going with her," Thomas said, his tone leaving no room for debate.

Dr. Keller glanced at Thomas’s towering frame, then nodded briskly.

"Scrub up in bay two, sir. You have two minutes."

As they wheeled my gurney into the blinding lights of the surgical suite, Marcus and Gabriel stood guard outside the double doors, arms crossed, daring anyone from the Pierce family to approach.

Inside the cold, sterile theater, the surgical team worked with furious efficiency.

Thomas sat beside my head, dressed in blue scrubs that looked ridiculously small on his massive shoulders, holding my ice-cold hand as the spinal block numbed my lower body.

"Talk to me, Thomas," I begged, shivering violently from the drugs.

"Tell me about the harbor."

"The harbor is waiting for you, Claire," Thomas said softly, his deep voice acting as an anchor in the storm.

"The Lady Eleanor is back in the water. We kept your cabin exactly the way you liked it. Books on the shelf, sea glass on the windowsill."

A tense, breathless minute passed, filled only with the suction pumps and the rapid beeping of monitors.

Then, at exactly two-forty-two in the morning, a loud, indignant wail cut through the surgical suite.

Dr. Keller held up a tiny, squirming baby girl, her skin pink, her dark hair thick and damp.

"She's here, Claire!" Dr. Keller announced with a triumphant laugh.

"Four pounds, twelve ounces, but she's breathing on her own. A fighter, just like her mother."

Tears poured down Thomas's face as he leaned over and kissed my forehead.

"You did it, Claire-bear," he whispered, his chest shaking with quiet sobs.

"You brought us a little girl."
