Chapter 9 - The Reckoning Of Don Carmine

The cleanup was swift, efficient, and merciless.
Within forty-eight hours, the entire syndicate structure was restructured under Luca’s absolute authority. Marco Varga was apprehended attempting to cross the Canadian border and delivered directly to the Blackwood cells to keep Carmine company. Donald Fontaine signed over half of his family’s shipping logistics to Luca as compensation for his daughter’s complicity in the conspiracy, effectively neutering the Fontaine family’s power for a generation.
Aria Fontaine left the country on a private charter to Monaco, banished from North America under penalty of immediate execution should she ever set foot on the continent again.
The public record had to be corrected.
On a bright, crisp Thursday morning, three days after the confrontation, the largest press conference in the history of the Cook County courthouse took place.
Reporters packed the steps as Luca Caruso, newly confirmed head of Caruso Enterprises, stepped up to the microphones with me at his side. I wore an elegant cream-colored coat, my hair styled, looking every bit the high-society matriarch they had prematurely buried seven months ago.
""Seven months ago, a tragic clerical and forensic error occurred following a vehicular accident during a blizzard,"" the Caruso family attorney announced to the flashing cameras. ""Mrs. Elena Caruso survived the incident with amnesia and has been recovering under private care in rural Wisconsin. Today, she returns to her husband, fully recovered, as they prepare for the birth of their first child.""
The flashbulbs erupted in a blinding storm. The reporters shouted questions, but Luca didn't let them crowd me. He wrapped his arm securely around my waist, shielding me from the noise, smiling down at me with an warmth the media had never once captured on his stoic face.
""Are you happy to be back, Mrs. Caruso?"" a journalist yelled from the front row.
I looked up at my husband, seeing the pride, devotion, and boundless love shining in his dark eyes. I touched my wedding ring, feeling the heavy kick of our son against my side.
""I never truly left,"" I replied into the microphone, my smile radiant. ""My heart was always with my husband. And now, we're going home.""
That evening, the grand estate in Lake Forest was finally emptied of the shadows that Carmine had cast over it for decades. The dark wood paneling and heavy velvet drapes were ordered stripped away, replaced by open windows, warm light, and preparations for a grand nursery overlooking the rose gardens.
Luca and I stood together on the second-floor balcony, watching the sunset cast purple and gold ribbons across the snow-covered grounds.

""It's finally over,"" I said, leaning my head against his shoulder.
""No,"" Luca murmured, turning to cup my face in his warm hands, his thumb tracing the line of my jaw with infinite tenderness. ""The nightmare is over, my love. Our life is just beginning.""
