Chapter 5 - Whispers In The Lion's Den

By noon the following day, the snowstorm had intensified into a raging blizzard, blanketing the Midwest in white silence. Inside the tactical war room on the ground floor of the lodge, Luca, Enzo, and four heavily armed commanders were studying holographic blueprints of Don Carmine’s fortified estate in Lake Forest.

I stood near the door, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, watching my husband command his men. There was an absolute, cold certainty in every word he spoke. This was the Luca Caruso the underworld feared: strategic, utterly ruthless, and impossible to predict.

""The south perimeter has three blind spots during the shift change at eleven-fifteen,"" Enzo explained, tapping the glowing screen. ""Carmine’s personal guard, the Black Coats, will be stationed around the perimeter of the courtyard. But we have inside confirmation: half the younger capos are disgusted that Carmine ordered a hit on a pregnant woman. The news of what happened at Patsy’s diner has leaked through the ranks.""

Luca’s expression was carved from granite. ""The old codes still mean something to the street soldiers. In our world, you kill a rival in cold blood and people call it business. You order the slaughter of your own bloodline, and you become a pariah. We don't sneak into the estate.""

Enzo blinked in surprise. ""Boss? You want to walk through the front gate?""

""We drive up the main avenue in broad daylight,"" Luca declared, his eyes flashing like polished steel. ""I am the Underboss of Chicago. I hold the blood right and the loyalty of the streets. If we creep in like thieves, Carmine paints us as rebels. If we walk in through the front doors, we force the council to choose between an aging coward who murders children and the man who built their fortunes.""

He turned to look at me, his gaze softening instantly. He walked over to where I stood, taking my cold hands into his warm ones. ""I need you to stay here, El. Dr. Morales and twenty of my best men are barricading this compound. Not even a bird gets past the tree line.""

""I spent seven months running, Luca,"" I said, looking directly into his dark eyes, refusing to look away. ""I’m not running anymore. If Carmine’s council needs to see that the bloodline is alive, they need to see me.""

The room went dead silent. Enzo exchanged a stunned glance with the tactical lieutenants.

""No,"" Luca said instantly, his voice cracking with sudden panic. ""Absolutely not. It’s too dangerous. If a firefight breaks out—""

""If you walk in alone, Carmine will claim you're hallucinating, or that you're using an imposter's child as a political gambit,"" I countered, stepping closer, resting my hand against his cheek. ""My father was Don Vincente. Those old capos served him for thirty years before Carmine took the throne. They loved my father. If Vincente’s daughter walks into that hall alive, carrying the next Caruso heir, Carmine won't be able to give an order without his own men turning their weapons on him.""

Luca stared at me, his breath coming hard, torn between his primal urge to lock me in a vault and the undeniable tactical brilliance of my proposal. He reached up, grasping my wrist, feeling the pulse hammering in my throat.

""You would walk into the lion’s den for me?"" he whispered.

""I’m walking into the den for us,"" I answered fiercely. ""For our son. I will not have him grow up with his father fighting in the shadows. We finish this tonight.""

Luca closed his eyes for a long moment, leaning his forehead against mine, his chest heaving. When he opened them, the last shred of hesitation was gone, replaced by an unstoppable, lethal resolve.

""Enzo,"" Luca barked, without breaking eye contact with me. ""Prepare the presidential convoy. Get the armored Mercedes ready. And bring out Vincente’s old seal from the vault. Tonight, my wife takes her rightful throne.""
