Chapter 4 - The Ring That Never Left His Pocket

The master suite of the Blackwood lodge looked out over a frozen valley, the snow falling in silent, heavy sheets against the reinforced glass. A massive stone fireplace crackled in the corner, casting a warm amber glow over the plush rugs and heavy timber beams.

Luca had brought in a private physician—a trusted field doctor bound to him by blood debts, who spent an hour examining me, running a portable ultrasound machine, and checking the baby’s vitals while Luca stood by the bed like a sentinel, his jaw tense until the rhythmic, galloping heartbeat of our son filled the room.

""Strong heartbeat, 145 beats per minute,"" Dr. Morales had announced with a reassuring smile. ""The mother is exhausted and slightly underweight, but the boy is thriving. Keep her hydrated, fed, and completely stress-free for the remaining six weeks.""

Now, the doctor was gone, resting in the guest wing, and the room was quiet.

I was freshly showered, wearing one of Luca’s soft cashmere sweaters that pooled around my knees, sitting by the fire with a mug of warm herbal tea. Luca sat across from me on the hearth, stripping down his sidearms, cleaning the components with mechanical precision. But his eyes strayed to me every few seconds, as if terrified that if he blinked too long, I would dissolve into mountain mist.

""You're staring,"" I said softly, holding the warm mug between my palms.

""I spent seven months looking at an empty marble tomb,"" he replied, setting the disassembled slide onto the cloth. ""I am never looking away from you again.""

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small silver chain that had been tucked beneath his collar. Dangling from the end of it was a platinum band set with an emerald-cut diamond—my wedding ring, the one the police had supposedly recovered from the wreckage on the riverbank.

""I wore it next to my heart every day,"" Luca said, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. He unhooked the clasp, slid the ring free, and knelt before my chair. He took my left hand, kissing each of my knuckles before looking up into my eyes. ""May I?""

I looked down at the man who had terrified kings and politicians, now kneeling before me like a penitent pilgrim. All the doubts that had poisoned my mind during those lonely, frozen months in my cheap studio apartment melted away. He wasn't the monster who had tried to kill me; he was the shield that had kept the real monsters at bay.

""Put it back where it belongs,"" I whispered.

Luca slid the platinum ring back onto my finger. It fit perfectly. He brought my hand to his lips, closing his eyes, his broad shoulders shaking slightly as a solitary tear tracked down his scarred cheek. ""I’m going to end this tomorrow, Elena. Carmine has mobilized the capos. He’s called a council meeting at the Chicago estate for midnight tomorrow, claiming I’ve lost my mind and need to be removed as underboss.""

""It's a trap, Luca,"" I warned, fear gripping my chest anew. ""Carmine won't fight fair. If he was willing to kill his own grandchild, he will slaughter anyone who stands with you.""

""Let him try,"" Luca replied, standing up and drawing me into his arms. He held me against his chest, his chin resting against the top of my head, his heartbeat steady and solid beneath my ear. ""He thinks he holds all the cards because he has the Fontaine alliance and the old guard. But he doesn't know what I have.""

""What do you have?""

""I have the truth,"" Luca said grimly. ""And I have the ledgers your father left you before he died.""

May you like

I pulled back, staring at him in shock. ""My father's ledgers? I thought they burned in the warehouse fire five years ago!""

""I pulled them from the flames before the fire department arrived,"" Luca revealed, a dangerous, triumphant smile touching the corners of his lips. ""Carmine didn't just order your hit to clear a political path. He ordered it because your father had documented twenty years of Carmine skimming billions from the commission’s pension funds and selling family soldiers to federal prosecutors to save his own skin. Tomorrow night, I don't just kill my father. I destroy his legacy forever.""
