Chapter 6 - Bloodlines Broken At Midnight

The iron gates of the Caruso Lake Forest estate were covered in black wrought iron, shaped into snarling gargoyles and crests of old Sicilian nobility. At precisely eleven o'clock, six black armored SUVs smashed through the outer perimeter barriers without slowing down, tires roaring over the manicured gravel driveway.
Guards scrambled across the courtyard, raising assault rifles, but they froze when the lead vehicle came to a halt directly before the grand stone staircase.
Luca stepped out first.
He wore an impeccably tailored black three-piece suit, his overcoat unbuttoned to reveal the Caruso family crest pinned to his lapel. The sheer presence of the man radiated an aura of untouchable power that caused the perimeter guards to lower their barrels in confusion and dread.
Then, Luca turned and extended his hand into the vehicle.
I stepped out into the biting winter air. I wore a long, flowing emerald gown that accentuated the unmistakable curve of my seven-month pregnancy, covered by a heavy black fur cloak. In my right hand, held high for every security camera and sentry to see, was the gold signet ring of Don Vincente—the legendary patriarch whose memory the syndicate still revered.
A collective gasp swept through the guards stationed along the grand balustrade.
""Holy Mother of God,"" one older guard whispered, making the sign of the cross as his rifle dropped to his side. ""It's Donna Elena. She's alive.""
Luca wrapped his arm around my waist, his stride deliberate and unhurried as we ascended the grand marble staircase, Enzo and ten elite bodyguards flanking our rear with heavy shotguns resting across their chests. No one fired a shot. The guards at the grand double doors simply stepped aside, bowing their heads in profound shame and awe.
The grand ballroom of the estate was filled with the top thirty capos of the Midwest syndicate. Cigar smoke drifted beneath crystal chandeliers, and heavy crystal glasses clinked around a massive mahogany conference table. At the head of the table sat Don Carmine Caruso, his silver hair swept back, his cruel, wrinkled face twisted in a smug smile as he addressed the assembly.
Beside him sat Donald Fontaine, Aria’s father, looking anxious and pale.
""My son has lost his mind to grief,"" Carmine was declaring, slamming a weathered fist against the wood. ""He's running through the countryside chasing ghosts, threatening our business partners! Tonight, by vote of the council, I strip Luca of his title and name—""
The massive oak doors of the ballroom blew inward with a thunderous crash.
Luca and I walked through the clearing smoke, side by side, our footsteps echoing against the polished marble floor.

The silence that followed was total. Glasses stopped halfway to lips. Cigars burned unattended. Don Carmine’s voice caught in his throat, his eyes bulging as if he had just witnessed the gates of hell open up.
""Good evening, Father,"" Luca said, his voice ringing through the cavernous hall like a death knell. ""I believe you were discussing my succession.""
