Chapter 6 - The Fall of Brooke Whitaker

The silence in the boardroom was suffocating. Richard Vance looked up from the forensic report, his expression hardened into disgust. He closed the binder with a sharp snap.
""The merger is suspended immediately,"" Vance said, standing up and buttoning his coat. ""Apex Holdings will not be associated with a firm harboring active financial fraud at the executive level. Furthermore, our legal department will be cooperating fully with the authorities.""
""Richard, please! Wait!"" Brooke panicked, rushing around the table toward Vance. ""This is a domestic dispute! Grant is having a nervous breakdown because he ran into his ex-wife at the airport! He's trying to ruin me because he's unstable!""
""Miss Whitaker,"" the lead detective said, stepping forward and intercepting her path. ""I am Detective Miller from the Chicago Financial Crimes Task Force, coordinating with the Dallas District Attorney's Office. We have a bench warrant issued forty-five minutes ago for grand larceny, wire fraud, and identity theft.""
Brooke took a step backward, her back hitting the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the darkened city. ""Wire fraud? You have nothing! You have corrupted server logs that any third-rate hacker could manufacture!""
""We don't just have server logs, Brooke,"" David spoke up, his voice steady and calm. ""We obtained the bank records from your mother’s LLC in Wilmington. The funds were transferred directly to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under your personal passport number. The electronic signature matches the one on your executive employment agreement.""
She looked around the room frantically, searching for an ally. She looked at Marcus, our legal counsel, but Marcus deliberately gathered his papers and took two steps away from her. She looked at the other board members, but every single one of them avoided her eyes.
Finally, she looked at me. The desperate corporate professional dissolved, and the venomous, predatory creature underneath finally broke through the surface.
""You think you're so noble, Grant?"" she spat, a chilling sneer twisting her face. ""You think you're a victim? You were an easy mark! You were so pathetic, so insecure about that sweet, simple little wife of yours that all I had to do was drop three blurry pictures on your desk and you threw her out like trash!""
A collective gasp echoed through the room.
""She was nobody!"" Brooke screamed, her composure completely shattered. ""She was a kindergarten teacher who didn't understand your ambition! I built this company with you! I took Sullivan Technologies from a ten-million-dollar startup to a national player! I deserved half of everything you owned! If I had to clear her out of the way to get what was rightfully mine, I'd do it again a thousand times!""
""You didn't just clear her out of the way,"" I said, my voice shaking with cold fury as I reached into my pocket. ""You left a pregnant woman homeless, Brooke.""
I pulled the four-carat engagement ring from my coat pocket. I didn't hand it to her. I let it drop onto the table, where it bounced twice and came to rest on the edge of the contracts she had tried to steal.
""Detective,"" I said quietly, turning my back on her. ""Take her out of my sight.""
""Brooke Whitaker, you are under arrest,"" Detective Miller announced, taking her arms and pulling them behind her back. The sharp, metallic click of handcuffs echoed across the room.
""Get your hands off me!"" she shrieked, thrashing against the officers as they led her toward the heavy double doors. ""Grant! You'll never survive without me! This company will fall apart by Monday! You hear me? You're nothing without me!""
Her screams faded down the carpeted hallway until the elevator doors dinged shut.
I stood alone at the front of the boardroom. The twenty executives remained frozen, unsure of what to say.
I turned to Richard Vance. ""Richard, Sullivan Technologies will not be selling our software division. We will be conducting a complete internal audit, restructuring our governance, and moving forward under new ethical leadership. If Apex wants to partner with us on licensing, my door is open. If not, I understand.""

Vance looked at me for a long moment, then extended his hand. ""Clean your house, Grant. When the dust settles, call my office. You're an honest man who was surrounded by wolves.""
I shook his hand, walked out of the boardroom, and took the elevator down to the lobby. For the first time in seven years, the suffocating weight in my lungs was completely gone.
