Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Boardroom

The executive boardroom on the thirty-second floor of the Grand Hyatt Chicago was the epitome of corporate opulence. Polished mahogany tables stretched beneath recessed architectural lighting, offering sweeping panoramic views of Lake Michigan shrouded in evening fog.

Brooke was holding court at the head of the table.

Dressed in an immaculate emerald silk blouse and tailored slacks, she was charming the executive committee from Apex Holdings. Across the table sat Richard Vance, the veteran CEO of Apex, flanked by four corporate attorneys and Marcus Cole, our internal legal counsel.

""Grant had a minor personal emergency arise at the airport, Richard,"" Brooke was saying smoothly, offering Vance a practiced, dazzling smile. ""He asked me to convey his deepest apologies, but as Chief Operating Officer and his designated proxy under our corporate charter, I have full binding authority to execute the final asset transfer.""

Vance adjusted his reading glasses, thumbing through the thick leather-bound binders. ""We certainly prefer having the founder present for an acquisition of this scale, Brooke. But Sullivan Technologies' performance metrics are stellar, and your leadership throughout these negotiations has been nothing short of exceptional.""

""Thank you, Richard. Grant is brilliant with code, but operations and governance have always fallen under my stewardship,"" she said, modesty dripping like syrup from her words. ""Shall we proceed to the signature page for the division buyout?""

Marcus slid the execution documents across the table. ""Page forty-two requires the proxy signature, Brooke. Once you sign and Richard countersigns, the wire transfer instructions for the escrow deposit will be initiated.""

Brooke unscrewed a heavy gold fountain pen. Her hand moved toward the signature line, her heart undoubtedly racing with the anticipation of a fifteen-million-dollar golden parachute and ultimate corporate victory.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding thud.

Every head at the table turned.

I walked into the room, flanked by two uniformed Chicago police detectives and an investigator from the state financial crimes unit. Behind us walked David Lin, carrying a secure laptop case and three sealed document folders.

Brooke froze, the pen hovering an inch above the paper. A flicker of irritation crossed her face before she quickly smoothed it into a mask of professional concern. ""Grant! Thank goodness you made it. We were just finalizing the preliminary signature block before the wire release. What is the meaning of bringing officers into a private closing?""

Richard Vance frowned, setting his glasses down. ""Grant? Is something wrong?""

""Everything is wrong, Richard,"" I said, walking slowly to the foot of the long table. I unbuttoned my suit jacket and looked directly down the length of the room at the woman who had lived beside me while systematically poisoning my world. ""Step away from the table, Brooke.""

Her eyes narrowed slightly, the mask beginning to crack. ""Grant, you're making a scene. We have twenty people in this room trying to close the biggest deal of your life. If you're having some sort of personal episode—""

""I said step away from the table,"" I repeated, my tone carrying an authority that silenced every attorney in the room.

Marcus cleared his throat nervously. ""Grant, as corporate counsel, I must advise you—""

""Marcus, you might want to look at the documents David is about to hand you before you say another word,"" I cut in.

David stepped forward, laying a thick manila folder in front of Marcus and another in front of Richard Vance.

""What is this?"" Vance asked, opening the folder.

""That, Richard, is a forensic audit completed two hours ago by our network security division,"" I explained calmly, never taking my eyes off Brooke. ""It outlines four point two million dollars in unauthorized wire disbursements over the past thirty-six months, funneled through dummy shell corporations registered to Brooke Whitaker’s immediate family. It also contains the digital trace logs proving corporate espionage, internal data manipulation, and the unauthorized alteration of executive communication records.""

The color drained from Brooke’s face in an instant. The radiant confidence vanished, replaced by a ghastly, hollow paleness. ""That's... that's absurd! It's a technical error. David is incompetent, he doesn't know how to read our offshore allocation matrices!""

May you like

""David didn't just read the matrices, Brooke,"" I said, stepping closer. ""He found the proxy routing you used seven years ago to send fabricated photographs to my private workstation.""

The mention of seven years ago hit her like a physical blow. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. The pen slipped from her fingers and rolled across the mahogany surface, leaving a trail of dark black ink on the pristine contract.
