Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail

The landing gear thumped onto the runway at Chicago O'Hare with a violent shudder, but it was nothing compared to the violent tremor shaking my chest. The moment the seatbelt sign chimed, Brooke grabbed her carry-on and adjusted her designer sunglasses.

""We need to hurry, Grant. The car service is waiting at door 3A, and Marcus is already at the conference center with the acquisition contracts ready for signing,"" she stated briskly, acting as though her tantrum forty minutes earlier had never occurred. ""Let's put this trashy flight behind us and close this deal.""

I didn't move. I let the other passengers filter past us. I watched the rear galley curtain, but Laura kept Sophie out of sight until the cabin was completely empty.

""Grant?"" Brooke snapped, turning around in the jet bridge. ""What are you doing? Move!""

""Go ahead to the hotel without me,"" I said, my voice hollow. ""I have some business to handle.""

""What business? We have a press conference at five!"" Her voice climbed an octave, irritation tightening her features. ""You are acting insane today! Over what? A sloppy flight attendant and some fatherless brat?""

I caught her wrist. Not hard, but with enough deliberate pressure to stop her in her tracks. My gaze locked onto hers, stripping away every ounce of warmth I had ever shown her. ""Don't you ever speak about that child again. Take the car. Review the closing appendices. If I'm not at the conference room by four, do not call me.""

I turned on my heel and walked back into the terminal before she could utter another sound.

My hands were shaking as I pulled out my phone and dialed David Lin, my chief technology officer and the only friend who had stayed by my side through the dark days of my divorce seven years ago.

""Grant? Aren't you landing right about now?"" David answered on the second ring.

""David, are you still at the Dallas headquarters?""

""Yeah, just leaving the server room. Why do you sound like you've seen a ghost?""

""I need you to lock your office door right now,"" I commanded, moving into a quiet corner near an empty gate. ""Do not let anyone see what you're doing. I want you to pull the encrypted server backups from seven years ago. Specifically, the month of October. The week Laura left.""

There was a long beat of silence on the other end of the line. ""Grant... we agreed never to open that wound again. You almost drank yourself to death after the divorce went through.""

""Listen to me carefully,"" I said, my breath catching in my chest. ""I just saw Laura. She was working our flight. And she has a daughter, David. A six-year-old girl named Sophie who looks so much like me it's terrifying. Laura swore the photographs were a setup. I need to know where those files originated.""

David exhaled sharply through his teeth. ""The anonymous envelope sent to your desk? You burned the hard copies.""

""The hard copies were scans of digital files sent to my private company inbox before someone printed them and slipped them into a manila folder,"" I remembered, the memory crystallizing with horrifying clarity. ""Find the digital logs. Trace the routing tags, the IP addresses, the internal server bounces. Everything.""

""Give me three hours,"" David said grimly. ""I'll dig through the deep storage cold-vault.""

I booked a nondescript business hotel near the airport, bypassing the luxury suite Brooke and I were supposed to share downtown. Inside the sterile room, I paced like a caged predator. My mind reeled through the timeline. Seven years ago, Brooke had been an ambitious senior director of marketing, eager, polished, and always available to console me when my marriage supposedly imploded. She had been the one who handed me the envelope, claiming an anonymous courier had dropped it at the front desk. She had been the shoulder I cried on when the divorce papers were finalized.

Two hours and forty minutes later, my laptop pinged with an encrypted incoming file transfer from David.

I opened the video call. David’s face appeared on the screen, pale and grim.

""Grant... you need to sit down,"" David said quietly.

""Tell me.""

""I pulled the original email logs that were scrubbed from your personal inbox forty-eight hours after the divorce was filed. The photos of Laura meeting that man in the downtown hotel room... they weren't sent from an outside black-hat service. They originated from inside our own building, routed through a proxy server on the fourth floor.""

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit. ""Whose workstation?""

David looked down at his clipboard, his jaw muscles working. ""The MAC address belongs to a terminal registered to Brooke Whitaker. And that's not all, Grant. The metadata on the original JPEG files shows extensive manipulation in Photoshop. The man's face in the car was Laura's gay cousin who passed away three years ago. The photos were staged, spliced, and altered. It was an internal execution, Grant. Brooke fabricated the entire affair from scratch.""
