Chapter 8 - The Aftermath at 480 Park

Twenty-four hours later, the media storm broke over Manhattan like a tidal wave.
Every television network, every newspaper headline, every trending topic on the internet was dominated by the explosive arrest of Chief Investigator Julian Mercer. The Civic Conduct Division had been raided by federal marshals; files revealing millions in laundered cartel money, illicit offshore properties, and systematic extortion schemes were broadcast across the globe.
Vincent Calder’s name was completely cleared. His shipping conglomerates were heralded as whistleblowers that helped the Department of Justice bring down the most corrupt official in New York’s history.
Inside the quiet, sun-drenched penthouse on Park Avenue, the world felt entirely different.
The storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, golden autumn afternoon. Evelyn sat on the cream velvet sofa, wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, holding a steaming mug of tea.
The heavy doors opened, and Vincent walked into the living room. Gone were the armor-like graphite suits and the terrifying scowl. He wore a soft navy sweater and dark trousers, looking younger, relaxed, and impossibly handsome in the afternoon sunlight.
He walked over and sat down beside her, placing a slender leather portfolio on the glass coffee table.
“What’s this?” Evelyn asked softly.
“A deed and medical enrollment papers,” Vincent said. “Your brother arrived at a specialized recovery facility in the Berkshires this morning. The best addiction specialists in the country, fully paid for three years. And when he completes the program, there is a small electrical subcontracting firm waiting for him in Vermont, registered entirely in his name. A clean slate, Evelyn. No debts, no shadows, no ghosts from his past.”

Evelyn stared at the papers, her throat tight with overwhelming emotion. “Vincent... why would you do this? After I doubted you? After I hesitated?”
“Because your family is your heart,” Vincent replied softly, reaching over to take her free hand into his. “And from now on, protecting your heart is my only priority.”
