Chapter 5 - The Red Hook Exchange

At midnight the following evening, a dense fog crept over the brackish waters of the East River, wrapping the rusted warehouses of Red Hook in a ghostly shroud.
Evelyn stood on the cracked asphalt of an abandoned lumber yard, the freezing wind whipping her blond hair across her face. In her trembling right hand, she clutched a sleek black flash drive. In her left ear, an invisible micro-earpiece hummed with the steady, reassuring sound of Vincent Calder’s breathing.
“Stay steady, Evelyn,” Vincent’s deep voice resonated directly into her ear canal. “Sniper team is in position on the water tower. Marco has the back alley blocked. I am forty yards out in the shadow of the crane. Do not hand him the drive until you see your brother breathing.”
Headlights cut through the mist. A black SUV rolled to a halt twenty paces away.
The driver’s door opened, and Julian Mercer stepped out. He was dressed in a pristine charcoal overcoat identical to the one Vincent had shredded, his silver hair neatly combed, an arrogant, victorious smile playing on his lips. Two heavy-set men stepped out behind him, dragging a disheveled, shivering figure between them.
“Daniel!” Evelyn cried out, taking a frantic step forward.
“Stay right there, darling,” Julian warned, raising an umbrella casually against the drizzle. “Look at you. Still shaking from your little encounter with Calder. Did the great titan roar when he saw my coat?”
“Let him go, Julian!” Evelyn shouted, fighting to keep her voice from cracking completely. “I have what you asked for. Every shipping ledger, every off-shore routing number, every private holding company registered behind the study painting. It’s all on this drive. Let Daniel walk to me, or I swear to God I’ll drop this into the sewer grate right below my feet!”
Julian chuckled, a dry, patronizing sound. He gestured with two fingers. The two thugs pushed Daniel forward.
Daniel stumbled across the wet asphalt, his face bruised and pale, his clothes smeared with grime. “Evie... I’m sorry,” he wept, coughing violently. “I messed up so bad... I didn’t know who they were...”
“It’s okay, Danny,” she soothed, keeping her eyes fixed on Julian. “Walk straight past me to the gate. Don't look back. Just run.”

Daniel scrambled past her, his frantic footsteps splashing in the puddles until he disappeared into the mist toward the awaiting extraction team.
Julian extended a gloved hand, stepping forward. “A touching family reunion. Now, give me the drive, Evelyn. And perhaps I’ll let you walk away from Calder’s burning empire in one piece.”
