Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

The penthouse on the seventy-second floor was a gilded cage of glass, white leather, and polished chrome. For twelve hours, Evelyn paced the perimeter like a trapped animal. The storm raged outside, throwing sheets of water against the panoramic windows overlooking the glowing grid of Manhattan.

There was food in the refrigerator, expensive wine on the marble island, and plush robes in the master bath, but Evelyn felt suffocated. Every door leading to the elevator vestibule was locked from the outside. Her phone was a useless brick, completely cut off by the suite’s signal dampeners.

At two in the morning, the heavy double doors clicked and swung open.

Vincent stepped inside. He had discarded his jacket and tie; his crisp white shirt was unbuttoned at the throat, the sleeves rolled up to reveal muscular forearms crossed with faint, ancient scars. In his hand, he carried a heavy manila folder and a glass of bourbon.

He walked over to the dining table and dropped the folder onto the polished quartz surface. “Look at it.”

Evelyn approached cautiously, her arms crossed over her chest. She pulled open the folder. Inside were high-resolution surveillance photos, bank statements, and shipping manifests.

“What is this?” she asked, her voice raspy.

“Mercer’s playbook,” Vincent answered, taking a slow sip of his drink. “Julian Mercer isn’t just an overzealous civic investigator trying to clean up the harbor. He owns half the shell companies running counterfeit pharmaceuticals through the Brooklyn Navy Yard.”

Evelyn stared at him, stunned. “Julian is a criminal?”

“Julian is a cartel front in a bespoke suit,” Vincent said coldly. “He’s been trying to force my shipping fleet to carry his unregistered cargo for eighteen months. I refused. So he decided to manufacture a scandal, bring down my legitimate operations, and seize my harbor terminals through municipal seizure.”

Vincent tapped a photo of Daniel standing in an alley behind a rusted loading dock. “Your brother didn’t stumble into the Mercer Street crew by accident, Evelyn. Daniel was specifically targeted three months ago. They engineered his gambling debts at an underground poker den Mercer owns. They bought his debt, threatened to break both his legs, and forced him to carry decoy packages so they’d have camera footage to blackmail you.”

Evelyn’s breath hitched. A sickening wave of nausea washed over her. “They used my brother to get to me... so they could get to you.”

“Yes,” Vincent said quietly, stepping closer. “And you walked straight into the spider’s web.”
