Chapter 5 - The Legal Wall

The next morning, the tropical sun rose in a blaze of brilliant orange over Haleakala volcano.
I spent two hours running along the coastal boardwalk, the salt air clearing the last remnants of lingering family guilt from my head.
When I returned to my suite, Marcy had emailed me three separate filings from the King County Superior Court.
Emergency Motion to Quash Foreclosure Notice — Denied.Injunction Against Lis Pendens Filing — Dismissed with Prejudice.Notice of Eviction Conference Scheduled for December 15.
Attached was a note from Marcy:
Emma, Richard hired a strip-mall bankruptcy lawyer who tried to claim oral modification of the contract. The judge practically laughed him out of the chambers. The court ruled that our promissory note is rock-solid and confirmed the statutory default.
My phone showed five text messages from my mother, sent between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM Seattle time.
Emma, please answer your phone. Dad’s blood pressure is dangerously high. He had to go to urgent care.We are willing to make monthly payments. We can do fifteen hundred dollars a month.Lena is willing to apologize to you in person. We will hold a late Thanksgiving dinner whenever you get back. You can't throw your own parents out in the winter. What will the neighbors say? Please, Emma. We gave you life.
I sat at the outdoor dining table overlooking the sea and drafted a single reply to the family group chat.
To Richard, Helen, and Lena:
For fifteen years, my worth to this family was measured entirely in invoices paid and fires put out. When Lena needed rent, I paid it. When the mortgage collapsed, I liquidated my own future to protect yours.
In return, you conspired to steal the deed behind my back and told me I was too unrefined to eat a holiday dinner in the house my labor saved.
The repayment terms are non-negotiable:
1. Seven hundred and twenty-four thousand dollars (principal plus accrued statutory interest and legal costs) wired to the escrow trust by December 15.OR2. Full, voluntary vacancy of the premises by December 31, with all personal property removed and the keys surrendered to Marcy's office.
If neither occurs, the sheriff will execute the writ of possession on January 2. Do not contact my personal phone again. All future communications must flow through Marcy at Alden Legal.
I hit send.
Then, for the first time in ten years, I blocked all three of their numbers on my device.

A sudden, overwhelming wave of profound lightness swept over me.
The invisible leash that had tethered my happiness, my savings, and my self-worth to their endless, bottomless drama had finally snapped clean in two.
