Chapter 3 - Island Air and Incoming Fire

Flight 842 touched down at Kahului Airport four hours later, the warm, fragrant trade winds sweeping across the tarmac as the jet bridge extended.

I walked through the terminal carrying my canvas weekender, the tropical sunlight pouring through the glass walls.

I switched off airplane mode.

My phone instantly vibrated for ninety continuous seconds, buzzing against my palm like an angry hornet.

Forty-two missed calls.

Sixteen voicemails.

Twenty-nine text messages.

I tapped the first voicemail from my mother. Her voice sounded thin, ragged, and breathless, completely stripped of the calm condescension from the night before.

Emma... Arthur Sterling walked out. He pulled the entire funding round. Lena is in her room throwing things... she says her life is over. How could you do this to your sister on Thanksgiving? On a holiday? Call your father right now!

I deleted the message without pausing.

I opened the next one, this time from my father.

Emma, this is Richard. You have gone too far. You humiliate us in front of influential people who were going to help this family recover? You cancel that lien by five o'clock today, or I will retain my own counsel and contest every dime you put into this house as an unconditional gift!

An unconditional gift.

I actually smiled as I walked out toward the rental car counter, feeling the warm Hawaiian breeze brush against my bare shoulders.

They really believed that because I had loved them, because I had quietly sacrificed fifteen years of stock options and lived in drafty studio apartments while Lena chased influencers across the globe, that I lacked the teeth to enforce a legal contract.

I picked up the keys to a white convertible Mustang, drove out past the emerald sugarcane fields of Maui, and pulled into the gravel drive of a secluded oceanfront villa in Wailea.

The ocean waves rolled gently against the black volcanic rocks below the private balcony.

I opened my laptop, connected to the resort's secure Wi-Fi, and pulled up my bank portal.

There sat the clean, untouched balance of my emergency fund, alongside the confirmation receipts for the six-hundred-and-eighty-thousand-dollar mortgage payoff I had executed six months prior.

My phone rang again.

This time, the screen showed Lena’s caller ID.

I tapped the green button and held the phone to my ear, listening to the sound of ocean waves breaking against the reef below.

"Emma?" Lena’s voice sounded desperate, shaking with a bizarre mixture of fury and pleading. "Where are you? Why aren't you answering Mom?"

"I’m having a late lunch in Maui," I answered smoothly.

A suffocating, stunned silence fell over the line.
