Chapter 7 - The Father's Stand

Diane watched Greg drive away, then turned her bloodshot eyes back toward me. All her composure was gone. Her hair was disheveled, her coat askew, looking less like a polished matriarch and more like a cornered animal.
""You ruined her,"" Diane hissed, pointing a trembling finger at me. ""You ruined your sister's marriage! You've destroyed this family, Claire! I gave birth to you! I raised you! How dare you stand there and look at me with judgment?!""
Before I could answer, the roar of another vehicle echoed up the driveway. A beat-up blue pickup truck came to an abrupt stop outside. Through the doorway, I saw my father, Richard, step out of the cab. He was wearing his old work jacket, his shoulders slumped under years of quiet suffering, but when he walked through the front doors of Oakridge, his eyes held a fire I had never seen before.
""That's enough, Diane,"" Dad said, his voice ringing with absolute authority.
Diane froze. ""Richard? What are you doing here? Tell your daughter to sign the papers! Tell her before she ruins Megan completely!""
Dad walked slowly into the center of the foyer, looking around at the magnificent home his mother had built. Then he looked at Megan, still sobbing on the floor, and finally at Diane. ""I should have done this twenty years ago,"" Dad said softly. ""I was a coward. I let you browbeat me, I let you threaten me with divorce and financial ruin, and I stood by while you treated our eldest daughter like dirt under your feet.""
""Richard, shut your mouth!"" Diane warned, stepping toward him aggressively.
""No,"" Dad said firmly, taking a thick stack of bank statements and court documents from beneath his coat. ""I went to the safe deposit box this morning, Diane. I have every transaction record from the trust you embezzled. I have the wire transfers to your personal accounts. I have the receipts from the equestrian trainers and the luxury vacations you funded with Claire’s money.""
Diane’s eyes filled with genuine terror. ""You wouldn't dare.""
""I already delivered copies to Arthur Pendelton's office an hour ago,"" Dad said, a serene, unshakable calm settling over his face. ""And I have already filed for divorce. The papers were served to your lawyer twenty minutes ago.""
Diane gasped, clutching her chest as if she had been struck. ""Divorce?! After thirty-two years?! Over what?! Over her?!""
""Over your cruelty, Diane,"" Dad replied, looking at her with nothing but profound sorrow and pity. ""You spat in our daughter's face on Christmas night. You looked at our little granddaughter and called her a burden. When you did that, whatever was left of my love for you withered and died. You have poisoned this family with your greed for decades. It ends today.""

Megan looked up from the floor, trembling. ""Dad... what about my debt? What about the condo developers? They're going to sue me!""
Dad looked down at his younger daughter, his expression aching with heartbreak. ""You are twenty-six years old, Megan. You signed commercial contracts based on lies and greed without doing basic due diligence. You and your mother will have to hire an attorney to settle with the syndicate. You will have to sell your sports car, downsize your lifestyle, and finally learn what an honest day of work feels like. Claire will not pay a single dime of your debt.""
