Chapter 2 - The Midnight Ultimatum

Daniel placed a steady, reassuring hand on my shoulder, stepping forward so that his broad frame blocked Diane’s view of our hallway. ""Get off our porch,"" Daniel warned, his voice low and dangerous. ""You have five seconds before I call the sheriff and report you for harassment and trespassing.""

Diane scoffed, looking at Daniel like he was an irritating insect. ""Stay out of this, Daniel. This is blood business. Claire doesn't have the stomach for this kind of wealth, and she certainly doesn't have the resources to maintain an estate like Oakridge. The property taxes alone would crush you two within six months.""

""Then let them crush me,"" I said, my voice hardening. ""Grandmother Evelyn wasn't senile. She was sharper than all of us combined. If she left Oakridge to me, it was because she knew exactly who you were, Diane. She saw how you isolated her in that nursing facility while you raided her jewelry boxes.""

Diane’s eyes widened in sudden fury, the mask slipping completely. ""You ungrateful little wretch! I paid for your college tuition! I gave you thousands when that child of yours was born!""

""And I paid back every single cent with interest while you held it over my head like a leash!"" I shouted back, stepping forward so that only inches separated our faces. ""You humiliated me in front of my family tonight. You spat in my face. You called Lily a burden. And now you come here begging me to surrender my inheritance so your favorite golden child can sell it off to a strip-mall developer?""

""It’s not just a house, Claire!"" Diane shrieked, losing her composure entirely. Neighbors' porch lights began flicking on across the street. ""Oakridge was appraised at 2.4 million dollars last week! There is an offshore commercial development syndicate waiting with a cash offer! That money belongs to the family! To Megan! To me!""

There it was. The truth laid bare in the freezing night air. Two point four million dollars. That was the price tag on Diane's motherly love. That was why she had been so hysterical at dinner. She had learned hours before the meal that the fortune she had mentally already spent was locked behind my signature. Her scheme to bully me into submission, to make me feel so worthless and small that I would sign away my rights out of sheer exhaustion, had backfired spectacularly.

""The answer is no,"" I said quietly.

""You listen to me—""

""No, Diane. You listen to me,"" I interrupted, staring dead into her frantic eyes. ""Tomorrow morning at nine o’clock, I am meeting Grandmother Evelyn’s estate attorney. If you or Megan so much as drive past this house tonight, I will file for an emergency restraining order. Now turn around, walk down my steps, and leave before Daniel dials 911.""

Diane stepped back, clutching the envelope to her chest as if it were a shield. Her face twisted into an expression of sheer, venomous hatred. ""You think you’ve won? You don't know the first thing about Evelyn’s affairs. You don't even know what's hidden inside that house, Claire. When I’m done with you, you won't have a single family member left. Your father, your sister, your aunts—they will all know you stole Megan’s future!""

She turned on her heel and stormed down the walkway, her heels clicking violently against the icy concrete. We watched until the red taillights of her Mercedes vanished around the corner. When Daniel closed the heavy wooden door and locked the deadbolt, the sudden silence in our hallway was deafening. My hands were shaking uncontrollably, not from fear, but from the sudden, tectonic shift of my reality.
