Chapter 6 - The Golden Child Crumbles

Megan stepped back, looking at her mother with wide, panicked eyes. ""Mom... is that true? Did you take her trust fund?""

""It was family money!"" Diane shrieked, her voice cracking under the weight of her unraveling web of lies. ""Your father and I were the parents! We had the right to allocate family resources where they were most needed! Megan had a future in competitive dressage! She had Ivy League potential! Claire was always plain, quiet, ordinary—she didn't need hundreds of thousands of dollars to work an office desk!""

Daniel let out a sharp, disgusted breath. ""You are a monster, Diane. You stole your own daughter's future to feed your sick favoritism.""

""Shut up, Daniel!"" Megan screamed, suddenly turning her fury on my husband. ""Even if Mom used that money, so what?! That was twenty years ago! Oakridge is supposed to be mine! Greg and I have already signed contracts with an investment group to develop this land into luxury condos! We have a half-million-dollar earnest money deposit on the line! If Claire doesn't sign over the deed, Greg and I will be sued into personal bankruptcy!""

I stared at Megan, absolutely stunned by the staggering depth of her entitlement. ""You signed commercial development contracts on a property you didn't even own?""

""Mom told us it was handled!"" Megan sobbed, tears of rage and entitlement streaming down her face. ""She told us the probate transfer was guaranteed! Greg put up our personal savings as collateral for the bridge loan! Claire, you have to sign the deed over! If you don't, they'll take our house! They'll ruin our credit! You're my sister—you can't do this to me!""

""You called my daughter a burden eighteen hours ago, Megan,"" I said, my voice as cold as iron. ""You sat there at Christmas dinner and smirked while Mom spat in my face. You didn't care if Lily and I had a roof over our heads. You didn't care that Daniel and I were skipping meals three years ago to pay back five thousand dollars that Diane stole from me in the first place.""

""I was stressed!"" Megan cried, falling to her knees on the marble floor, reaching out toward the hem of my coat. ""Please, Claire! I'm begging you! You don't need this giant house! Take the money trust and give us the land! If you don't sign, Greg will leave me! Everything will fall apart!""

Greg stepped back toward the front door, shaking his head in sheer disbelief. ""Megan, get up off the floor,"" he said, his face red with shame. ""You told me your grandmother gave you this house in her will. You told me your sister was estranged and had no claim. You lied to me.""

""Greg, please!"" Megan begged, looking back at her husband.

""I’m leaving,"" Greg said flatly, pulling his car keys from his pocket. ""I’m calling a lawyer. If you dragged me into a fraudulent real estate conspiracy with your mother, we are done.""

Greg turned and walked out the front doors, letting the heavy wood slam behind him. The sound reverberated through the grand entrance hall like a gunshot, signaling the definitive collapse of Megan’s carefully constructed world of luxury and deceit.
