Chapter 7 - The Freezing Fortress

Friday night brought the first major cold front of November to suburban Chicago. By midnight, the temperature on Oak Ridge Drive dropped to nineteen degrees Fahrenheit.

Inside the Vance household, the radiators were dead metal. The natural gas company had shut off the main valve at noon due to non-payment, and the high-tier electric heaters were completely useless because the power grid had reverted to the baseline municipal cutoff Clara had authorized.

Daniel and Eleanor were huddled in the master bedroom, wrapped in three layers of blankets, wearing heavy winter coats and woolen gloves indoors. The only light in the entire house came from two scented wax candles flickering weakly on the nightstand.

""Daniel... my joints,"" Eleanor wept, her voice trembling violently from the bitter chill. ""My fingers are swollen... I can't take the pain without my medication... Why hasn't your lawyer called back?""

""Because we don't have a lawyer, Mom!"" Daniel barked through chattering teeth, his breath rising in pale puffs inside the bedroom. ""Lawyers cost money! Retainers cost five thousand dollars! I have sixty-two dollars in my checking account! Sixty-two dollars!""

""You should have fought her!"" Eleanor sobbed, pulling a moth-eaten quilt up to her chin. ""You should have asserted your authority as the man of this house! She’s your wife! The law protects husbands!""

""The law doesn't pay electric bills, Mom!"" Daniel roared, throwing off his blankets and standing up, his face twisted in agonized fury. ""Look around you! Look at what your stupid pride did! You sneaked into her room like a common criminal to cut her hair because you couldn't stand that she made more money than me! You told me it would humble her! You told me she would wake up crying and quit her job!""

""She was supposed to!"" Eleanor wailed. ""Good women submit to their families!""

""She wasn't submitting! She was subsidizing!"" Daniel screamed, the brutal reality finally tearing through his thick skull. ""She paid for your knee injections! She paid for your bridge club luncheons! She paid for the roof over our heads! We didn't own her—she was keeping us alive! And you destroyed the only golden goose we had!""

A sharp knock echoed through the dark downstairs hallway.

Daniel froze. Hope flared wildly in his chest again. Maybe Clara had sent someone with heaters. Maybe she had realized that leaving them in the freezing cold was too cruel.

He scrambled down the dark stairs, nearly tripping over the edge of the hallway rug, and pulled the front door open.

It was not Clara. It was a young courier in a bright yellow windbreaker, holding an electronic signature pad and a thick waterproof legal envelope.

""Daniel Vance?""

""Yes! What is it?""

""Urgent courier delivery from Vance & Sterling Legal Group. Sign here.""

Daniel scribbled his signature with stiff, numb fingers, snatched the envelope, and slammed the door against the freezing wind. He carried the packet into the kitchen, using the light of his phone screen to tear open the wax seal.

Inside was a single legal instrument titled: STIPULATED MARITAL SETTLEMENT AND VOLUNTARY VACATUR AGREEMENT.

Attached to the front was a handwritten note from Clara on thick executive stationery:

Daniel,

You told me that hair grows back and that I was overreacting to being mutilated in my sleep.

Money can be earned back, too—if you have the discipline and skill to earn it. Unfortunately, you have neither.

Enclosed are the final terms. Sign the complete waiver of marital assets, assume full responsibility for your personal credit card lines, and agree to vacate the Oak Ridge property by Sunday at 5:00 PM. In exchange, I will decline to pursue felony criminal battery charges against your mother, allowing her to avoid county jail time.

You have until Saturday at noon. If the executed documents are not on Marcus Vance's desk by twelve o’clock, the State’s Attorney will file the criminal indictment on Monday morning.

Stay warm,

May you like

Clara.

Daniel dropped the paper onto the kitchen island. His knees buckled, and he sank slowly down onto the cold, bare tile floor, burying his face in his woolen gloves as the freezing darkness closed in around him.
