Chapter 4 - The House of Broken Glass

By three o'clock that afternoon, Oak Ridge Drive had descended into pure chaos. Daniel sat on the edge of the living room sofa, his hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, clutching his cell phone like a lifeline. The kitchen trash can was overflowing with junk mail, and the house had grown uncomfortably cold because the smart thermostat had reverted to eco-mode after Clara’s high-speed home network account was deactivated.
Eleanor was pacing back and forth across the hardwood, clutching a cold cup of instant coffee because she didn't know how to operate the manual French press.
""Call your father’s brother!"" Eleanor demanded, waving her wrinkled hands. ""Call Uncle Robert! We need twenty thousand dollars immediately! The pharmacy refused to release my specialty injections this morning! They told me the card on file was flagged for suspected fraud! It was that witch! She reported my card stolen!""
""Mom, shut up for five minutes!"" Daniel screamed, slamming his phone against the coffee table. ""I can't call Uncle Robert! He hates us! He still thinks I owe him five grand from college! You don't understand what’s happening! The lease on my car was under Clara’s company perk package! They’re sending a flatbed tow truck to take it this afternoon if the arrears aren't cleared!""
Before Eleanor could scream back, a heavy knock pounded against the front door.
Daniel jumped up, a desperate look of relief flashing across his face. ""It’s her. She realized she took it too far. She’s coming back to apologize.""
He sprinted to the entryway and yanked the heavy mahogany door open, a smug reprimand already forming on his lips. ""Clara, you've caused an absolute disas—""
The words froze in his throat.
Standing on the porch was not Clara. It was a burly man wearing a windbreaker with Cook County Sheriff markings, flanked by a tall, sharply dressed process server carrying a thick legal dossier. Behind them, an unmarked industrial locksmith van was parked curbside.
""Daniel Vance?"" the deputy asked, chewing gum and looking down at a clipboard.
""Yes... what is this?""
The process server stepped forward and thrust a heavy, blue-backed legal packet into Daniel's chest. ""You have been officially served with a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage on grounds of extreme cruelty, alongside an Emergency Order of Protection issued by Cook County Circuit Court on behalf of Clara Sterling. You and Eleanor Vance are formally notified that the premises located at 1404 Oak Ridge Drive are the sole non-marital property of the Sterling Family Heritage Trust.""
Eleanor rushed to the door, her face contorted in fury. ""This is my son’s home! You can't hand us pieces of paper and tell us to leave! We are a respectable family!""
The deputy didn't even raise his voice. He unclipped his duty belt slightly, his tone completely flat. ""Ma'am, you have thirty days to vacate under the standard eviction proceedings, but under the terms of the emergency protection order regarding the assault with a deadly instrument—specifically, the forced shearing of the petitioner’s head while incapacitated—Eleanor Vance is required to remain at least five hundred yards away from Clara Sterling at all times. If Ms. Sterling requires access to this property to retrieve her remaining corporate equipment, you must vacate the premises within twenty minutes of notification.""
""Assault with a deadly instrument?!"" Eleanor shrieked, clutching her throat. ""They were hair clippers! I trimmed my own son's wife's hair! It’s a domestic discipline matter!""
""Tell it to the judge on Tuesday, ma'am,"" the deputy replied. ""Furthermore, the utilities registered under Clara Sterling's corporate account will terminate completely at midnight tonight. I suggest you find alternative arrangements for heating and water.""
The two men turned and walked down the driveway, leaving the front door wide open to the crisp autumn wind.
Daniel stood paralyzed, staring at the formal legal seals stamped on the front of the petition. His eyes drifted down to the financial disclosure addendum attached by Clara’s attorney. Clara was not just asking for a divorce; she was seeking full indemnification and reimbursement for over one hundred and eighty thousand dollars in unauthorized marital debts Daniel had secretly accrued on joint accounts over the last twenty-four months.
""Daniel..."" Eleanor whimpered, her voice finally losing its shrill arrogance, replaced by raw, cold fear. ""What are we going to do?""
May you like
Daniel looked at his mother, the woman who had convinced him that Clara was an arrogant subordinate who needed to be put in her place. For the first time in his pampered, protected life, he saw the cliff edge right in front of his toes.
""You ruined us, Mom,"" Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with hollow despair. ""You cut off her hair... and you cut off our entire world.""
