Chapter 2 - The Morning Wake-Up Call

Back at the house on Oak Ridge Drive, Eleanor Vance woke up at 6:45 AM feeling a triumphant surge of matriarchal authority. For months, she had watched Clara rise through the ranks of corporate America, earning four times what Daniel brought home from his glorified mid-level logistics consultancy. It infuriated Eleanor to see a woman command the household checkbook, drive the newest company crossover, and refuse to drop everything to drive her to Tuesday morning bridge club. In Eleanor’s mind, cutting Clara’s hair was a necessary surgical strike—a humiliation ritual designed to strip the girl of her corporate vanity so she would stay behind closed doors where she belonged.

Humming an old church hymn, Eleanor slipped into her floral housecoat and marched down the spiral staircase, expecting to find Clara in an apron, crying over a skillet of scrambled eggs.

Instead, the kitchen was completely dark. The air smelled of cold tile and printer toner.

""Clara!"" Eleanor barked, flicking on the chandelier. ""Where are the eggs? Daniel has an eight-thirty Zoom call, and you know he requires freshly ground espresso before he speaks to clients!""

The silence of the house answered her. Then, her eyes caught the object sitting directly atop the Italian espresso machine: Daniel's electric hair clippers, sitting beside the yellow sticky note. Eleanor frowned, picked up the note, and read Clara’s neat handwriting: Breakfast is on you today.

""Ungrateful little brat,"" Eleanor hissed under her breath. She stomped over to the dining table to inspect the neat stack of white paper left under the chandelier. At the top of the stack sat Clara’s engagement ring, gleaming coldly on top of a sheared plastic American Express card.

Eleanor grabbed the papers, her bifocals slipping down her nose. The bold header on the first page read: TERMINATION OF VOLUNTARY HOUSEHOLD SUBSIDY. Beneath it was an itemized list of forty-two separate recurring payments canceled between the hours of 2:15 AM and 3:00 AM.

- Oak Ridge Mortgage Supplemental Reserve: CANCELED

- BMW Financial Services Lease (Daniel Vance): AUTO-PAY TERMINATED

- Premier Rheumatology Concierge retainer (Eleanor Vance): TERMINATED

- ComEd High-Tier Household Electric Grid: REVERTED TO PRIMARY OCCUPANT (DANIEL VANCE)

- Municipal Water & Sanitation: CARD REMOVED

""Daniel!"" Eleanor shrieked at the top of her lungs, dropping the papers across the polished floorboards. ""Daniel, get down here right this instant! She’s lost her mind!""

Daniel stumbled into the kitchen five minutes later, scratching his belly in his pajama bottoms, yawning loudly. ""Mom, what are you screaming about? It’s not even seven. Did Clara finally make breakfast or what?""

""Look at this!"" Eleanor shoved the mortgage document directly into his chest. ""Look at what that vicious, spiteful girl did! She canceled my medical treatments! She canceled your car payment! She canceled the electricity!""

Daniel blinked the sleep out of his eyes, his smirk evaporating as his gaze swept across the numbers. ""Wait... this is just an empty threat. She’s throwing a tantrum because of the hair. Clara doesn't have the guts to pull the plug. Her name is on the house, too.""

""Read the fine print, you idiot!"" Eleanor yelled, her face flushing crimson. ""The house deed is in her family trust! You only hold occupancy tenancy rights!""

Daniel snatched his phone off the counter and quickly dialed Clara's direct line. It rang half a time before routing straight to an automated corporate message: The subscriber you are trying to reach has restricted incoming calls. For legal matters regarding Clara Sterling, please contact the Vance & Sterling Legal Group.

""Sterling?"" Daniel muttered, a chill finally breaking through his arrogant exterior. ""She changed her voicemail name back?""

He grabbed his keys off the rack by the door and dashed out to the garage, intending to drive straight to Clara’s corporate headquarters downtown to confront her before the executive board. He pressed the ignition button on his luxury German SUV. The engine turned over for a split second, sputtered, and died. A bright red warning flashed across the center console screen: VEHICLE REPOSSESSION IMMOBILIZER ACTIVATED BY LEASING ENTITY. CONTRACT IN DEFAULT.

Daniel slammed both hands against the steering wheel, his breathing ragged. He pulled out his wallet, pulled out his secondary Visa card, and dialed the bank's automated helpline.

""We are sorry,"" the soothing automated voice echoed through the car speakers. ""Card account ending in 4108 has been deactivated by the primary account guarantor, Clara Sterling. Current available balance: Zero dollars. Current outstanding balance due on Friday: fourteen thousand eight hundred and sixty dollars.""

Daniel fell back against the headrest, staring blankly at the garage door. The house, the cars, the food, the very air they breathed in this neighborhood—it wasn't an inherent birthright. It was a luxury hotel suite, and the woman paying the bill had just checked out.
