Chapter 4 - The Scramble for Survival

Pandemonium broke out across the Rosewood Estate. The elite of Rhode Island and New York, who moments ago had been sipping vintage Dom Pérignon and mocking two humble bakers from Vermont, turned instantly into a panicked herd of self-interested sharks.

Investors began frantically dialing their brokers, shouting orders over the roar of the ocean wind to dump any remaining public shares associated with Whitmore hospitality subsidiaries. Catering staff, sensing the tectonic shift in power, completely stopped serving drinks, standing along the periphery with folded arms, openly watching the mighty fall.

Alexander dropped to his knees right in front of me on the cold, wet marble, heedless of the water soaking through his tailored trousers. ""Emily, please! Listen to me!"" he pleaded, his voice breaking into pathetic, ragged sobs. He reached out to grab the hem of my dress, but I stepped back, letting the fabric slip through his fingers like sand. ""I was wrong! I swear to God I was wrong! I didn't mean what I said about your parents! You know how my mother gets, she stresses me out, she pushes me... I was just trying to keep peace before the vows!""

""You watched her shove a sixty-two-year-old woman into deep water, Alexander,"" I said, looking down at him with undisguised pity. ""You adjusted your cufflinks and made a joke about their station. You didn't protect the woman you claimed to love, and you certainly didn't protect the people who raised her. You don't know what love is. You only know entitlement.""

""Emily, we can fix this!"" Victoria gasped, rushing forward, her haughty demeanor completely evaporated. She reached out with trembling, claw-like hands, attempting to grasp my arm, but two towering men in sharp navy suits—my personal security detail who had been blending in with the estate staff—stepped between us, blocking her cold. ""Emily, think of the scandal! Think of our family name! We can apologize to your parents! I will buy them a bakery in Manhattan! I will buy them an entire chain of bakeries! Just call off Callahan! Don't ruin us over a foolish family misunderstanding!""

""A misunderstanding?"" My father's deep, steady voice rang out from behind me.

We all turned. My father had wrapped my mother in dry tablecloths fetched by a sympathetic bartender. He stood tall, his silver hair still damp, but his posture radiating an innate dignity that none of the Whitmores could ever purchase with their borrowed millions.

""Mrs. Whitmore,"" my father said, walking forward and looking the matriarch straight in the eye. ""My bakery was built with forty years of honest sweat. Every loaf of bread I sold carried my family's honor. When you pushed my wife into that pool, you didn't prove we were beneath you. You proved that all your money couldn't buy you an ounce of class. Keep your apologies. We wouldn't take a single dime from your stained hands.""

""Dad,"" I whispered, stepping beside him and looping my arm through his wet coat. ""Let's get Mom to a warm room. The car is already waiting out front.""

""Emily, wait! Don't leave!"" Alexander screamed, crawling forward on his hands and knees. ""If Vanguard calls the note, the banks will freeze every personal account we have by midnight! We won't even have enough cash to pay the estate staff! We'll lose everything!""

""Then I suggest you start learning how to bake bread, Alexander,"" I replied without looking back. ""I hear it's honest work.""

With my parents flanked safely by my side, I walked down the grand stone steps of the Rosewood Estate, leaving behind the screaming, the crying, and the hollow ruins of a family that had built their pedestal out of arrogance and sand.
