Chapter 2 - The Golden Microphone

The high-pitched screech of microphone feedback cut violently through the terrace, startling the crowd into absolute stillness. Victoria turned around, a frown creasing her forehead as she watched me standing on the elevated stage, my bare feet planted firmly against the dark wood, my ruined veil trailing over the sodden hem of my gown. Alexander’s face darkened with arrogant fury as he strode toward the platform, his polished leather shoes clicking sharply on the marble.
""Emily, put that down right now!"" Alexander hissed from the base of the stairs, keeping his voice low enough to avoid being picked up by the speakers. ""You are embarrassing me, you are embarrassing my mother, and you are embarrassing this family. Get off the stage before I call security to escort you out.""
I tapped the mesh of the microphone with my index finger. The rhythmic thud resonated through the massive Bose speakers hung around the estate grounds. ""Good evening, ladies, gentlemen, and distinguished creditors,"" I spoke, my voice calm, melodic, and terrifyingly clear. ""Before we proceed to dinner and celebrate the joining of two illustrious names, I have a few corrections to make regarding tonight's program.""
Victoria scoffed, waving her hand dismissively at the private security guards standing near the garden gate. ""Remove her. The girl has lost her mind from the heat.""
The two guards took a step forward, but paused when I locked eyes with Marcus Vance, the managing partner of Vance Capital and the most powerful private investor in New England, who was sitting at Table One. Marcus knew who I was. He had worked with me on three hostile takeovers. He held up a single hand, signaling the security team to stand down. Victoria’s eyes widened slightly at Marcus’s unexpected intervention, but her aristocratic pride kept her chin held high.
""Alexander just informed me that my parents should know their place,"" I continued into the microphone, locking eyes with my fiancé. ""My parents spent forty years waking up at four in the morning, working eighteen-hour days to build an honest life and put me through the Wharton School of Business. They taught me integrity, respect, and above all, never to look down on someone who works for a living. Victoria Whitmore believes that wealth confers royalty, and that anyone without a trust fund is beneath human dignity.""
""Shut her up, Alexander!"" Victoria snapped, her voice rising in genuine panic as she noticed guests beginning to pull out their iPhones to film the spectacle. ""Cut the power! Turn off the sound system!""
""You wanted to show everyone where my family belongs, Victoria,"" I said, my tone ice-cold. ""So let me show everyone where yours truly stands. The Whitmore family has paraded around Newport for eighteen months pretending to be titans of industry. But behind those custom suits and borrowed estate gates lies a rot so deep it’s breathtaking. Over the past four years, Whitmore Hospitality has posted consecutive quarterly losses exceeding forty million dollars due to gross mismanagement, lavish personal spending, and ill-fated offshore developments in the Bahamas.""
Gasps rippled through the gathered crowd. Several prominent bank executives in attendance began murmuring urgently to their companions. Alexander’s jaw dropped. ""How do you... Emily, what the hell are you talking about?""
""I am talking about the fact that tonight’s wedding was never about love, Alexander,"" I answered, looking directly into his horrified eyes. ""It was a PR stunt designed to calm nervous lenders and project stability to Wall Street before Monday morning’s audit. But more importantly, it was supposed to keep me close, because your CFO realized months ago that your family’s entire future hinged on a single private debt restructuring fund.""

I reached into the hidden pocket sewn into the inner lining of my voluminous gown and pulled out my encrypted titanium smartphone. ""Tonight was supposed to be the day I merged our assets and signed the debt extension agreement. But seeing my parents shivering in that pool brought absolute clarity to my mind.""
I turned to the three hundred stunned guests. ""The wedding is canceled. The bar is closed. And the Whitmore dynasty ends tonight.""
