Chapter 3 - The Midnight Deadline

Victoria stormed toward the stage, her aristocratic mask completely shattering into an ugly contortion of rage. She pointed a trembling finger at my chest. ""You arrogant little peasant! You think you can slander our name in front of our peers? You are nothing! You came into this house with a single suitcase and a generic consulting degree! We gave you everything! We put you on the guest lists of the most exclusive clubs in the country, and you dare repay our generosity with fabricated lies?""

""Fabricated?"" I smiled, unlocking my phone and connecting it directly to the stage's digital audiovisual display system, which was originally set up to project our romantic couple photos during our first dance. With two quick taps, the massive sixty-foot high-definition LED wall behind the band flashed brightly.

The romantic engagement photos vanished. In their place appeared high-resolution scans of certified forensic audit documents, bank reconciliation statements, and unredacted default notices bearing Victoria and Alexander Whitmore’s personal signatures.

The crowd erupted into an uproar. Several high-profile hedge fund managers jumped out of their seats, pulling out reading glasses to inspect the numbers glowing overhead. The figures were indisputable: Whitmore Hospitality had over-leveraged their flagship properties by over three hundred percent. Their liquidity reserves sat at a pitiful nine hundred thousand dollars, while their short-term obligations totaled a staggering eighty-four million dollars.

""That's confidential company data!"" Alexander shouted, his voice cracking as he lunged toward the stage stairs. ""Where did you get that? Emily, turn that off right now! That is a federal crime!""

""I don't need to steal what I legally purchased, Alexander,"" I said softly, stepping down from the stage and meeting him on the marble floor. I held my phone to my ear, hitting the speed-dial button labeled 'Callahan - Execution.'

The call connected on the first ring. The deep, authoritative voice of Arthur Callahan, senior managing director at Vanguard Crest, sounded clearly through the open line, which I switched directly onto the speakerphone next to my microphone.

""Good evening, Emily,"" Arthur said, his tone crisp and entirely professional. ""We have the documentation ready on our end. Are we executing the five-year debt maturity extension for Whitmore Hospitality as planned?""

""Change of plans, Arthur,"" I stated, holding the microphone steady so that every single person on the terrace could hear every syllable. ""Cancel the extension. Issue an immediate Notice of Acceleration for the seventy-five-million-dollar senior secured credit facility. Demand full repayment within two hours.""

Silence, absolute and suffocating, fell over the entire estate.

On the line, Arthur didn't hesitate. ""Understood. The Whitmores have failed to maintain their debt-to-equity covenants, which triggers the immediate forfeiture clause under Section 9 of the primary mezzanine agreement. Since the primary debtor cannot satisfy the liquidity requirement, Vanguard Crest will initiate strict foreclosure proceedings at the stroke of midnight. Is that your final directive, Chairwoman Carter?""

""Chairwoman Carter?"" Victoria whispered, stumbling backward until her back hit a tall marble urn. Her face had drained of all color, turning as white as the linens on the dining tables. ""You... you own Vanguard Crest?""

""I founded Vanguard Crest seven years ago,"" I said, looking down at her. ""I kept my name out of the public press releases because I preferred my privacy. When Alexander approached my firm begging for a bailout eight months ago, he had no idea he was pitching to my board. I agreed to restructure the loan personally because I believed he was an honorable man who was simply trapped under his mother’s poor business decisions. I thought we were building a future together.""

I tossed the wireless microphone onto the floor, where it produced a dull, heavy thud.

""You told my father to know his place, Victoria,"" I said coldly. ""Now let me show you yours. Pack your bags. By midnight, this estate belongs to my portfolio.""
