Chapter 8 - Adrian’s Reckoning

Three days later, the high-profile legal aftermath of Roman Valenti's arrest began in federal district court. Adrian sat in the second row of the gallery, watching quietly as Roman, dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit with his ankles chained, was led before the magistrate judge. The arrogance that had once defined him had completely dissolved, replaced by a hollow, vacant terror.
Elena Brooks took the stand as an expert witness, presenting a meticulous paper trail of Roman’s offshore shell corporations. With laser-like precision, Elena demonstrated how Roman had systematically embezzled funds, forged bills of lading, and conspired to bankrupt his father’s legitimate enterprise. The judge denied bail without hesitation, remanding Roman to a maximum-security federal detention center pending trial.
As Adrian exited the courthouse steps into the crisp afternoon breeze, Enzo Valenti was waiting for him near a black town car. The old man looked weary, but his posture remained dignified.
“Adrian,” Enzo called out quietly.
Adrian walked over, extending his hand. Enzo took it, gripping it firmly with calloused hands.
“I owe you an apology, Adrian,” Enzo said solemnly. “When my son insulted your wife at your home, I watched to see if you would strike him down. When you chose to laugh it off, I judged you harshly. I assumed you were a weak man who prioritized money over family honor.”
Adrian shook his head, holding Enzo’s gaze with absolute honesty. “You were right to judge me, Enzo. At that moment, I was weak. I let greed and corporate ambition blind me to what truly mattered. If Claire hadn't been the brilliant, formidable woman she is, I would have ruined us both.”
Enzo offered a faint, approving smile. “A man who can admit his failures in the light of day is a man worth doing business with. But do not deceive yourself, Adrian: you are fortunate. Very few men in our life find a woman who can not only match their ambition, but outwit their deadliest enemies. Protect her.”
“With my life,” Adrian promised.
Later that evening, Adrian returned to the Lake Forest estate. For the first time in two years, the cavernous, opulent mansion felt warm and alive. He walked into the library, where a crackling wood fire cast a golden glow across the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
Claire was sitting in an armchair by the hearth, reading through a new dossier from Elena regarding an expansion into the Port of Rotterdam. She looked up as he entered, a soft smile touching her lips.
Adrian didn’t say a word. He walked over, removed his jacket, tossed it onto a sofa, and knelt beside her chair. He rested his head against her lap, breathing in the familiar scent of jasmine and vanilla that was unmistakably hers.
Claire’s fingers gently ran through his thick hair, soothing away the lingering tension of the past week. “Long day at court?”
“A necessary one,” Adrian murmured, closing his eyes. “Roman is gone, Claire. He will spend the next fifteen years answering for what he tried to do.”
“And Enzo?”
“Enzo transferred fifty-one percent of the maritime holding stock into Brooks & Associates escrow today. You own the controlling voting rights of the transatlantic corridor.”

Claire paused her hand, looking down at him with an amused arch of her eyebrow. “You gave me fifty-one percent?”
Adrian opened his eyes, looking up at her with complete, unshakeable devotion. “I didn't give you anything, my love. You took it. And I would follow you into any room on earth just to watch you rule it.”
