Chapter 2 - An Uninvited Power Player

The morning sun barely cut through the autumn fog rolling off Lake Michigan when Claire arrived at the high-rise office building on Michigan Avenue. Dressed in a sharply tailored charcoal Saint Laurent pantsuit, with her honey-blonde hair pinned into an immaculate twist, she looked every bit the formidable executive she had buried two years ago.

The private penthouse floor belonged to Brooks & Associates Global. Inside, Elena Brooks was already waiting, sipping a double espresso while reviewing legal binders. At fifty-two, Elena possessed a sharp, razor-edged elegance that intimidated Wall Street tycoons and foreign dignitaries alike.

“Claire,” Elena greeted her, setting down her porcelain cup and offering a genuine smile. “When your email came through last night, I thought I was dreaming. I believed Adrian Bellucci had locked you away in a golden cage forever.”

Claire walked over, embracing her former mentor warmly before taking a seat opposite the vast glass desk. “The cage was comfortable until the bars started pressing against my chest. Adrian is expanding his logistics network, and he just brought Enzo Valenti to the table.”

Elena’s expression instantly sobered. The warmth vanished, replaced by an icy, analytical focus. “Enzo Valenti? He’s old-school Sicilian nobility masquerading as an olive oil and dry-goods distributor. He’s ruthless, but calculated. His son Roman, on the other hand, is a reckless liability with a gambling habit and ties to offshore laundering syndicates in Cyprus.”

“I met Roman last night,” Claire remarked dryly. “He made a public spectacle of belittling me in Italian, assuming I was nothing more than an ornamental housewife.”

Elena chuckled, shaking her head. “The fool had no idea he was speaking to the woman who restructured the Genoa Port Authority debt in four months.”

“He knows now,” Claire said, leaning forward. “Enzo realized it immediately. In fact, Enzo called my personal cell twenty minutes ago while I was driving downtown.”

Elena arched an eyebrow, intrigued. “Enzo bypassed Adrian to call you directly?”

“He did,” Claire confirmed. “He wants to schedule an urgent review of their supply chain contract this afternoon. But he explicitly requested that Roman be excluded from the meeting—and he asked if I would personally oversee the governance provisions on behalf of the Bellucci hospitality arm.”

Before Elena could respond, the heavy glass doors of the reception lobby swung open. The sound of heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed across the polished marble. Claire didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. The unmistakable presence of Adrian Bellucci always filled an entire room with electric tension.

Adrian stood in the doorway, accompanied by two of his security associates. He was wearing an Italian tailored three-piece navy suit, his face set in a rigid mask of controlled fury. His dark eyes locked directly onto Claire.

“You didn’t answer your phone,” Adrian said, his voice quiet yet vibrating with suppressed authority.

“I was driving, Adrian,” Claire replied calmly, not flinching. “And as you can see, I was attending a scheduled business meeting.”

Adrian stepped further into the office, his gaze shifting to Elena Brooks with cold appraisal. “Mrs. Brooks. I didn’t realize my wife was serious when she mentioned your name last night.”

Elena didn’t flinch either. She leaned back in her leather executive chair, offering a polite, icy nod. “Mr. Bellucci. In our world, women like Claire don't make idle statements. If she says she is taking a meeting, she takes a meeting. Now, unless you have scheduled business with our advisory firm, you are trespassing on private commercial property.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened. He looked back at Claire, his voice dropping to an intimate, urgent murmur. “Claire, Roman’s father just pulled the entire revised distribution agreement off the table. He sent word that negotiations are suspended until further notice. Whatever game you started playing at dinner last night, you broke the deal.”

Claire smiled faintly, rising to her feet. “No, Adrian. I didn’t break the deal. I saved you from signing your own execution order. And if you want the Valenti network intact, you’re going to sit down and listen to the woman you laughed at.”
