Chapter 6 - Cornered at the Gala

“You think you’ve won?” Roman snarled, tears of humiliated rage mixing with sweat on his cheeks. His pistol trembled in his grip as he aimed it directly at Adrian. “If I go down, Bellucci, I'm taking you with me! You think the syndicate cares about Swiss bank freezes? They want their collateral! And if I give them your head, they’ll wipe my slate clean!”

“Roman!” Enzo barked, his voice carrying the terrifying thunder of a mafia Don who had commanded armies. “You lower that weapon this instant, or you cease to exist as my son!”

Roman was beyond reason. His finger tightened on the trigger.

In a fraction of a second, Adrian moved. Not to draw his own weapon, but to throw his entire body weight between Roman’s line of fire and Claire, slamming her down behind the reinforced door of the armored Maybach.

BANG.

The gunshot echoed deafeningly off the corrugated iron walls of the warehouse. A round struck the upper window frame of the vehicle, showering safety glass across the wet concrete. Before Roman could cycle a second shot, the warehouse doors behind them burst open in an explosion of blue and red tactical flashlights.

Dozens of federal agents in tactical gear, accompanied by Chicago police officers, swarmed the entrance with rifles raised. “Federal agents! Drop your weapon! Drop it now!”

It wasn't a police raid orchestrated by Adrian. Standing just behind the lead federal tactical officer was Elena Brooks, accompanied by two high-ranking officials from the International Trade Commission.

Roman dropped his gun in horror. The weapon clattered uselessly onto the concrete floor. He raised his trembling hands above his head as four federal agents tackled him to the ground, pinning him against the damp pavement and securing his wrists in steel cuffs.

Enzo did not look at his son as he was dragged away in handcuffs. The old man stood rigid, his head held high, though a heavy sadness settled deep in his eyes. He turned to Adrian, who was on his knees, his hands desperately checking Claire for injuries.

“Claire,” Adrian breathed, his voice cracking with sheer terror. “Are you hit? Did it touch you?”

Claire sat up against the wheel well of the car, brushing glass fragments from her coat. She looked at Adrian—at the genuine fear in his eyes, at the way he had instinctively used his own chest as a shield to protect her life. For all his flaws, when the moment of truth arrived, he hadn't hesitated to die for her.

“I’m fine, Adrian,” she whispered, her voice steadying. “I’m completely unhurt.”

Adrian exhaled a ragged breath, pulling her into his arms and burying his face into her neck, holding her so tightly she could feel the violent pounding of his heart. “I don't care about the contracts. I don't care about the clubs. If anything had happened to you because of my pride...”

Claire rested her hand on his cheek, feeling the rough stubble beneath her fingers. “I know, Adrian. I know.”

Elena Brooks walked over, stepping gracefully around the shattered glass, and offered Claire a hand up. “The federal marshals have Roman in custody. The contraband containers are being impounded as evidence of Roman’s personal financial treason. The Valenti commercial enterprise is cleared of all operational complicity.”

Enzo approached the three of them, leaning heavily on his cane. He looked at Claire with profound, solemn respect. “Signora Bellucci. You have preserved my empire from internal rot and spared my family public execution. Name your terms. Whatever restructuring Brooks & Associates demands, I will sign without altering a single comma.”

Claire met Enzo’s gaze with the poise of an empress. “We will discuss terms tomorrow, Signor Valenti. But moving forward, you won't be dealing with a proxy. The Bellucci-Valenti partnership will be managed directly under my signature.”

Adrian stood beside her, a proud, humble smile touching his lips. “And under hers alone.”
