Chapter 23 - The Billionaire's Hidden Deal

Daniel Reynolds entered the federal building surrounded by three attorneys.

He looked exactly as I remembered.

Expensive suit.

Perfectly styled hair.

An expression suggesting that every room belonged to him.

Years earlier, he had been the powerful husband Sophia claimed to fear.

Now he was a central witness in a financial investigation connected to my daughter's final hours.

Rachel asked me to remain outside the interview room.

I agreed.

I had no desire to see another wealthy man explain why the rules didn't apply to him.

But I listened later when Rachel summarized the verified details.

Daniel admitted visiting the Moretti mansion on the night Lily died.

He said he had arranged a confidential meeting with Jonathan Price to discuss a proposed acquisition involving healthcare technology.

He claimed he had no knowledge of Lily's medical emergency.

Investigators were skeptical.

Security records showed that emergency vehicles arrived while Daniel was still on the property.

A second recording captured him leaving through a rear entrance.

"Why didn't he offer help?" I asked.

Rachel answered carefully.

"He claims Price told him the family had the situation under control."

I stared at her.

Another powerful man.

Another convenient excuse.

"Did he call anyone?"

"Not according to the records we've reviewed."

My hands curled into fists.

The pattern was becoming unbearable.

Everyone had assumed someone else would protect my daughter.

Everyone had prioritized their own interests.

Everyone had walked away.

Rachel continued.

"Daniel has produced contracts showing that Reynolds Capital invested in Northstar's medical-data platform. He maintains the investment was legal."

"Was it?"

"We've identified serious irregularities. We're still tracing where the money went."

Julian examined a copy of the investment summary.

He frowned.

"Some of these documents describe patient monitoring technology."

"Yes," Rachel replied.

"Was that technology ever used in Lily's treatment?"

"That's under review."

Julian shook his head.

"Any clinical deployment would have required proper approval and oversight."

Rachel nodded.

"That's one of the issues we're investigating."

I listened in silence.

I had once managed complicated corporate transactions.

I understood how people used paperwork to create the appearance of legitimacy.

A clean-looking invoice.

A respectable company name.

A board of directors filled with impressive titles.

And behind it all, money moving through structures nobody bothered to question.

Only this time, my daughter's name was in the records.

That afternoon, Vincent requested permission to speak with me.

Rachel said he wanted to provide information about Daniel's relationship with Price.

I almost refused.

Then I remembered the years of hidden financial arrangements I had helped untangle.

If Vincent could explain something important, I wanted to hear it.

We met in a conference room with Julian present.

Vincent looked exhausted.

"I should have told you this years ago," he began.

I folded my arms.

"That seems to be a recurring theme."

He accepted the criticism without protest.

"Daniel and Price had been doing business long before Sophia began spending time with me."

"What kind of business?"

"Commercial properties. Port leases. Private equity investments."

"And you knew?"

"I knew some of it."

He swallowed.

"Price used my companies to move money between their ventures."

I stared at him.

"Were you aware that Lily's medical records were involved?"

"No."

He looked directly at me.

"I swear I wasn't."

I said nothing.

Four years earlier, those words might have been enough.

Now I needed evidence.

Vincent continued.

"Price once told me Daniel had something on Sophia that could destroy her reputation. I assumed it was her affair."

"Was it?"

"Apparently not."

Julian leaned forward.

"What else?"

Vincent hesitated.

"Price said Sophia had signed documents for the medical venture using Daniel's authorization."

I frowned.

"Why would Sophia be involved?"

"She wanted money. Price needed someone who could move between Daniel's financial world and mine."

Suddenly, an old memory surfaced.

Sophia visiting our mansion and insisting she had come to see Margaret.

Sophia spending time in the nursery while Lily played nearby.

Sophia asking strangely specific questions about Lily's doctors.

At the time, I assumed she was trying to appear interested in our family.

Now those questions felt different.

"She was collecting information," I whispered.

Vincent lowered his head.

"Maybe."

Julian gently touched my arm.

"We still need proof."

I nodded.

There had already been too many assumptions.

Later that evening, Rachel called again.

A financial forensic team had traced one of the suspicious transfers through Reynolds Capital.

The money ultimately reached an overseas account associated with Jonathan Price.

But the authorization attached to the transaction carried two electronic signatures.

One belonged to Daniel Reynolds.

The other belonged to Sophia.

Rachel paused.

"Claire, investigators are now examining whether Sophia was more deeply involved than she admitted."

I looked out the window at the darkening Chicago sky.

For years, Sophia had played the helpless victim.

Then the manipulative mistress.

Then the ruined socialite.

But perhaps every version had concealed the same truth.

May you like

She had been willing to do almost anything for money and attention.

And now, finally, the people she betrayed were beginning to understand just how far those ambitions might have reached.
