Chapter 19 - The Evidence That Changed Everything

The recovered hard drive was badly damaged.

Forensic specialists warned that some files might never be readable.

I spent three days waiting.

Three days moving through Lily's Garden like a ghost.

Three days watching Julian leave for the hospital and wondering whether someone was following him.

Three nights waking from dreams in which Lily was calling my name from behind a locked door.

On the fourth morning, Rachel asked us to come to the federal building.

Marco accompanied us.

Vincent was also there, seated at the far end of the conference table.

He rose when I entered, then quietly sat again.

I barely looked at him.

A digital forensic analyst named Brian Foster opened a laptop.

"We've recovered several documents from the drive," he explained. "Some are incomplete, but the metadata and surviving content provide important leads."

He displayed a series of invoices.

Northstar Clinical Advisory Services had billed Moretti Enterprises for services supposedly provided to Lily.

The amounts were staggering.

One invoice exceeded eight hundred thousand dollars.

Another listed an emergency clinical review costing more than three hundred thousand.

Julian frowned.

"Those charges are not consistent with routine pediatric care."

Brian nodded.

"We believe the invoices were used to disguise transfers."

Vincent stared at the screen.

"Jonathan Price."

Rachel turned to him.

"Did you authorize these payments?"

"I authorized annual medical budgets," Vincent answered. "I didn't personally review these invoices."

I felt anger rise inside me.

"Of course you didn't."

He lowered his eyes.

"I know."

Brian continued.

"The most significant recovered file is a partially reconstructed audio recording."

My heart began pounding.

"What recording?"

"It appears to have come from a home security device. The file date is the night Lily died."

The room became completely still.

Rachel looked at me.

"Claire, we can play it later if you'd prefer."

I shook my head.

"Play it."

A faint hiss came from the speakers.

Then a woman's voice.

Evelyn.

"She's struggling again."

Another voice answered.

Margaret.

"Then call the doctor."

"I already did."

"Don't involve the hospital unless you have to."

My hands went numb.

Evelyn spoke again.

"Her mother is downstairs. Claire knows something is wrong."

Margaret sounded irritated.

"Claire always thinks something is wrong."

A child's voice appeared faintly in the background.

My daughter.

"Mommy?"

I covered my mouth.

The sound of Lily's voice, after four years of silence, struck deeper than anything I had ever experienced.

Julian immediately reached for me.

On the recording, Evelyn said, "She's asking for her mother."

Margaret answered, "Then get Claire."

There was a pause.

A door opening.

Footsteps.

The recording dissolved into static.

I burst into tears.

Julian wrapped both arms around me.

My daughter had been frightened.

She had called for me.

And somewhere inside that enormous house, adults had been arguing about whether to seek emergency care.

Brian waited until I could breathe.

"There's another recovered segment."

I nodded.

"Please."

This recording began several minutes later.

Jonathan Price's voice.

I recognized it immediately.

"Is the transfer finished?"

Evelyn answered, "Yes."

"Then remove the records."

"What about the child?"

A long silence.

Then Price said, "That's not my problem."

The recording ended.

Vincent pushed back his chair.

His face had turned ashen.

"He was talking about money," he whispered.

Rachel nodded.

"That's one interpretation. We need to authenticate the recording and establish the context."

I stared at the screen.

All these years, I had believed Sophia was the center of the betrayal.

Her lies had kept Vincent away.

His selfishness had left me alone.

But behind their cruelty, another operation had been unfolding.

A financial conspiracy involving people who knew my daughter was medically vulnerable.

People who had treated her suffering as an inconvenience.

Rachel turned to me.

"Claire, we're pursuing two separate questions. What happened medically to Lily, and whether anyone deliberately concealed evidence to protect the financial scheme."

I nodded.

"Find the answers."

Vincent spoke for the first time in several minutes.

"I want to testify."

Rachel looked at him.

"About what?"

"Everything I know about Price. Every account. Every payment. Every person he used."

His voice trembled.

"I spent years hiding behind men like him. I'm finished."

I finally looked at my former husband.

There were tears in his eyes.

But I no longer confused tears with redemption.

"Then tell the truth," I said. "All of it."

He nodded.

"I will."

As we prepared to leave, Rachel received a message from her field team.

She read it twice.

Then she looked up sharply.

"We found Jonathan Price."

My heart jumped.

"Where?"

"At a private airfield outside Chicago."

"Has he been arrested?"

Rachel's expression changed.

"Not yet."

She turned the phone toward us.

A security camera showed Price boarding a small private aircraft.

Beside him stood a woman wearing a dark coat and sunglasses.

Evelyn Cross.

May you like

And in Evelyn's hand was a small pink suitcase.

The same suitcase Lily had carried on her final family vacation.
