Chapter 4 - The Clean Break

Prosecutor Marcus Vance sat across from me in a soundproof interrogation room on the twelfth floor of the Dirksen Federal Building. Two senior FBI agents stood silently by the door. On the steel table lay a single black leather binder containing seven years of meticulous ledger entries.

""Mrs. Moretti,"" Vance said, leaning forward, his reading glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. ""What you have here isn't just leverage. This is a complete structural breakdown of the Moretti shipping logistics network. It proves offshore tax fraud, money laundering through commercial dry docks, and systematic bribery of maritime port inspectors.""

""I am not an informant, Mr. Vance,"" I replied clearly, staring him straight in the eye. ""I have no interest in witness protection. I have no interest in your immunity deals, and I will not testify about violent crimes or illicit syndicates. That’s your job to investigate.""

Vance frowned. ""Then what exactly are you doing here?""

""I am turning over every document that carries my signature,"" I explained smoothly. ""During my marriage, Vincent had me listed as the primary corporate officer for Moretti Commercial Logistics—his legitimate front. He did it so the company could qualify for state grants and minority tax status under my clean civilian record. I am dissolving my corporate ownership and transferring these audited ledgers to the Department of Justice so my name is completely cleared of any regulatory violations.""

Vance inspected the pages, his eyebrows rising higher with every flip. ""If the DOJ seizes these maritime permits and freezes the commercial lines, Vincent loses eighty percent of his clean cash flow. His legal businesses will collapse overnight. His legitimate partners will abandon him.""

""That is between him and the federal government,"" I said. ""I am simply taking back what belongs to me: my maiden name, my professional license, and my freedom.""

I stood up, smoothed down my black wool coat, and pulled on my leather gloves. ""The divorce decree has been finalized through my private attorneys. Vincent signed it this morning.""

He had signed it because Marco had delivered a simple message to him: Sign the papers, or Claire burns every ship in the harbor within twenty-four hours. Vincent had signed with a shaking hand, refusing to take a single dollar from my settlement demands. In his mind, signing was an act of penance, hoping it would leave an open door for forgiveness.

He didn't realize that for me, signing was slamming the iron vault shut forever.
