Chapter 8 - The Shattered Crown

The silence in the room was absolute. You could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning unit fifty feet away.
Vittorio picked up the paper with trembling fingers. His eyes scanned the document, darting across the signatures, the account numbers, and the undeniable legal seal. Beside him, Lorenzo frowned, leaning over his father's shoulder.
"What is that?" Lorenzo demanded, his voice cracking with rising anxiety. "What does it mean, Dad?"
Vittorio didn't answer his son. The color had completely drained from his weathered face, leaving his skin the color of wet parchment. He slowly lowered the paper back onto the table, his hands trembling so noticeably that his silver rings tapped against the wood.
"You bought Aegaeon," Vittorio whispered, his voice hollowed out of all its former arrogance. "You bought my fleet."
"I bought sixty percent of your family's operating assets, Vittorio," I said, leaning forward, resting my elbows on the table and lacing my fingers together. "Which means that technically speaking, I am your primary landlord, your shipping director, and your chief creditor."
"This is bullshit!" Lorenzo roared, slamming his fist onto the table so hard that the wineglasses rattled. "She's bluffing! You can't just buy a mafia family's business with a piece of paper! This is the underworld, lady! We don't take orders from a woman with a spreadsheet!"
"Sit down, Lorenzo," Dante growled, his voice carrying the weight of a guillotine blade dropping.
Two of Dante's top enforcers stepped out from the shadows near the wall, their hands resting casually beneath their jackets. The other capos around the table didn't move a muscle to defend Lorenzo. They were hardened criminals, and they understood power; whoever controlled the money controlled the guns.
"You have twenty-four hours to produce eighty million dollars in cash, Vittorio," I continued, ignoring Lorenzo completely. "If the funds are not wired to Vance Capital by five o'clock tomorrow afternoon, my legal team in New Jersey will file an immediate emergency seizure petition with the federal maritime commission. Every container, every ship, and every distribution warehouse bearing your corporate name will be padlocked by federal marshals."
"You'd bring the feds into this?" Lorenzo yelled, his face turning purple. "That's treason! That breaks every oath in the syndicate!"
"It isn't treason," I replied, flashing a cool, radiant smile. "It's standard corporate foreclosure. Clean, legal, and completely lethal. Your family will be bankrupt by Monday morning, and every rival family in New York will carve up your territory before dinner."

Vittorio closed his eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath. When he opened them, the old lion looked utterly defeated. He looked at Dante, but Dante simply kept his eyes fixed on me, making it crystal clear who held the reins.
"What do you want, Mrs. Moretti?" Vittorio asked, his voice barely a rasp. "What are your terms?"
