Chapter 10 - The Queen of Chicago

An hour later, the penthouse was quiet once more.

The rain had stopped, leaving the night sky over Lake Michigan clear and filled with stars. The lights of the Chicago skyline twinkled below us like a sea of diamonds, stretching out into the endless Midwestern horizon.

I stood on the private terrace, wrapped in a plush cashmere robe, holding a glass of vintage Barolo. The cool autumn breeze tugged at loose strands of my hair, carrying the clean scent of the lake.

A pair of strong, warm arms slid around my waist from behind. Dante pulled me back against his broad chest, his chin resting gently on my shoulder. I leaned into his warmth, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart against my back.

"You terrified them," Dante murmured into my ear, his voice rich with admiration and something deeper, something that had been growing between us over the last forty-eight hours. "I have never seen Vittorio Bellini bow to anyone in twenty years. Tonight, he looked at you like you were the devil himself."

"I'm not the devil, darling," I smiled, taking a sip of the wine. "I'm just an auditor who knows how to read the small print."

Dante turned me around in his arms so that I was facing him. He looked down at me, his dark eyes shining with an emotion that stripped away the cold, ruthless exterior of Chicago’s most feared mafia boss. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

He opened it to reveal a magnificent platinum signet ring, engraved with the crest of the Moretti syndicate—the symbol of supreme executive authority that only the family boss was permitted to wear.

"What is this, Dante?" I asked softly, looking at the heavy ring.

"When I married you, Sophie, I thought I was protecting you from the darkness of my world," Dante said, his voice husky with sincere emotion. "I thought you were fragile. I wanted you to stay innocent, away from the blood and the deals. I was a fool."

He took my right hand, lifting it to his lips, kissing my knuckles before gently sliding the signet ring onto my index finger. It fit perfectly.

"You don't need my protection," Dante continued, looking straight into my eyes. "You never did. You are the sharpest blade in this city. From this night forward, we don't have a boss and a trophy wife. We rule this syndicate together. Equals in business, equals in blood, and equals in life."

I looked down at the ring, feeling its heavy, cool weight on my finger, then looked up into the eyes of the man who had finally learned who I was. The arrogance was gone, replaced by an unshakeable bond of mutual respect, trust, and a fierce, burning love forged in the fires of an underworld war.

I reached up, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling his face down toward mine.

"Together, Dante," I whispered against his lips.

He kissed me—a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our new reality beneath the glittering stars. We had taken down our enemies without firing a single bullet at the summit table, secured an empire that spanned from the Midwest to the Atlantic coast, and transformed a marriage of convenience into an unbreakable fortress.

The city of Chicago lay at our feet, vast and powerful, but tonight, they didn't just fear Dante Moretti. Tonight, they knew that the real power wore diamonds, spoke fluent Italian, and would never be silenced again.
