Chapter 6 - The Swiss Gambit

The call to Zurich took place at two in the morning, Chicago time. I sat at the dining table with Dante sitting beside me, our laptops connected to a secure satellite phone terminal.

On the other end of the line, Henrik Lindqvist’s dry, measured voice echoed through the speaker. "Sophie. It has been a long time. I hear you retired to the American Midwest. I assume you didn't wake me at eight in the morning Swiss time to discuss the weather in Illinois."

"Good morning, Henrik," I said in crisp, professional German before switching back to English so Dante could follow every word. "I'm calling about the Aegaeon Maritime default. Portfolio Seven-Alpha."

There was a brief pause on the line, followed by the sound of papers rustling. "Ah. The Greek-registered container line. An absolute headache. The primary debtors are erratic, and our legal team suspects the freight manifests are... creatively embellished. The board wants it off our balance sheet before the fiscal quarter closes."

"I have a buyer who is prepared to acquire the entirety of the outstanding note," I stated clearly. "Forty-two million dollars in cash, wired through a private trust in Geneva within twelve hours. No contingencies, no secondary audits. We take the debt as-is."

"Forty-two is below par, Sophie," Henrik noted, though there was genuine interest in his voice. "The face value is eighty."

"The face value is useless if the federal authorities seize the ships next month, Henrik," I countered smoothly. "You know the risk profile. A clean forty-two million today prevents your risk committee from taking a full write-down in November. And you know my due diligence never misses."

Silence hung over the line for ten seconds. Dante held his breath, his eyes fixed on the speakerphone.

"You always were our sharpest blade, Sophie," Henrik finally chuckled softly. "Send the transfer instructions to my private terminal. If the funds clear by two o'clock our time, the debt assignment papers will be signed and notarized by three. Who is the beneficial entity?"

"Vance Capital Trust," I replied. "I am the sole signatory."

"Done," Henrik said. "Good luck with those clients, Sophie. Whoever they are, they don't know who they're dealing with."

The call ended with a soft click. Dante immediately opened his encrypted banking portal, authorizing the transfer of forty-two million dollars from his international accounts into the Vance Capital escrow line. As the progress bar reached one hundred percent and the screen flashed Transfer Complete, Dante let out a long, heavy breath.

"It's done," he whispered, looking at the glowing confirmation code. "We own Vittorio’s lifeline."

"Not quite yet," I warned, closing my laptop. "Now comes the dangerous part. Vittorio will receive formal notice of the debt assignment from Zurich tomorrow morning. He’s going to realize that someone just bought his throat. When a beast is cornered, it strikes."

"Let him strike," Dante said, his eyes darkening with dangerous excitement. He reached out, wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me onto his lap. The distance that had separated us for months had completely dissolved in the fire of this high-stakes game. "Tomorrow night, I'm calling a summit at Bellacorte. All twelve captains, the entire Chicago commission, and Vittorio Bellini."

"Are you going to tell him?"

"No," Dante murmured, his lips brushing against my neck, sending a shiver through my spine. "You are."
