Chapter 2 - The Ride in Silence

The heavy blast doors of Bellacorte hissed shut behind us as the private elevator dropped toward the basement garage. The silence inside the steel cabin was suffocating, thick with unspoken accusations and wounded pride. Dante stood three inches taller than me, his hands buried deep in the pockets of his slacks, his profile carved from cold, uncompromising granite.

Two armed bodyguards stood outside our armored Maybach. They snapped to attention, opening the heavy rear door without a word. Dante waited for me to slide onto the butter-soft leather interior before climbing in beside me and slamming the door shut himself.

"Home," he barked through the partition to Marco, his head of security.

The glass divider rose, sealing us into an soundproof bubble as the limousine glided out into the chilly Chicago drizzle. Outside, the amber streetlights washed over the wet pavement, reflecting off the river like shattered gold.

"You humiliated me," Dante said. His voice was low, deceptively calm, the tone he used before ordering someone's execution.

I didn't flinch. I carefully took off my diamond earrings, letting the cold stones rest in the palm of my hand. "I saved you forty million dollars and a ten-year federal indictment, Dante. If your pride bruises that easily, perhaps you should wear thicker skin."

"You made me look like an amateur in front of the Bellinis!" He turned toward me, his dark eyes blazing in the shadows of the cabin. "I told you to smile! I told you to let me handle the negotiation! Instead, you played corporate prosecutor and exposed an operation I had been building for four months!"

"They were laughing at me in a language they assumed I couldn't understand, Dante!" I snapped back, my composure cracking just enough to let my anger show. "And you joined in! You laughed with Lorenzo when he called me an empty-headed trophy who only cares about handbags!"

"It was strategy, Sophie!" Dante shouted, leaning in until I could smell the expensive scotch on his breath. "In this world, you let your enemies underestimate you! You let them believe they hold the upper hand until you have the noose around their necks! I didn't care about their petty insults; I cared about signing the supply lines!"

"And what happens when your 'strategy' blinds you to the fact that they were slipping a noose around your neck?" I retorted, pointing a manicured finger at his chest. "You didn't read the annexes, did you? You looked at the delivery schedules and the projected revenue, but you never checked the legal jurisdiction of their maritime insurer. Vittorio was setting you up to take the fall for their dirty ports."

Dante leaned back against the headrest, closing his eyes. His jaw muscles twitched violently. He didn't answer because he knew I was right. In the brutal world of organized crime, bullets were easy to spot; it was the ink on the paper that killed you without warning.

"Where did you learn Italian?" he asked quietly after several long minutes of silence.

"I lived in Florence for two years while finishing my master's degree," I said, looking out the rain-streaked window. "You never asked. When you proposed, you asked if I wanted a penthouse on Michigan Avenue, not where I had been."

"I thought you were safe," he whispered, a strange, bitter edge in his voice. "I thought you were the one part of my life that wasn't covered in blood and deceit."

"Nobody is safe in your world, Dante," I said softly. "The difference is, I know how to survive it without pulling a trigger."
