Chapter 6 - The Receipts of Treason

"Over the past fourteen months," the auditor announced, pointing a digital laser at the glowing screen, "Mr. Sterling authorized the transfer of two point four million dollars from the Western Distribution Expansion Fund into an offshore holding company registered in Nevis under the name Vale Logistics LLC."
Madison Vale let out a strangled gasp, burying her face in her hands as she began to sob uncontrollably.
"Those funds," the auditor continued, clicking to the next slide, "were used to purchase a five-bedroom penthouse in Lincoln Park, two luxury European vehicles, and to cover private medical expenses at Northwestern Memorial Hospital for Ms. Madison Vale."
Adrian turned to Madison, his eyes flashing with desperate, murderous rage. "You swore those offshore accounts were untraceable! You said your brother handled the shell company registrations!"
"Shut up, Adrian!" Madison screamed through her tears, lifting her head to glare at him. "You were the CEO! You signed the wire releases! You told me Claire was a naive coward who would never look at the financial books!"
"That is grand larceny, embezzlement, and corporate fraud," Jonathan Vance stated plainly, turning to the board. "Under Illinois law, the board has an affirmative fiduciary duty to refer these findings immediately to the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois."
"No! Please! God, no!" Adrian fell to his knees beside the mahogany table, crawling past the chairs toward me, completely abandoning every shred of dignity he possessed. "Claire! Think of our daughter! If I go to federal prison, she will grow up with a felon for a father! You can't do this to her!"
"My daughter will grow up knowing her mother protected her from a thief and a coward," I replied, standing up slowly, my posture upright and unyielding. "You didn't think about our daughter when you missed my anatomy scan to buy Madison a diamond tennis bracelet. You didn't think about our daughter when you held another woman's son in that hospital suite and asked me for five minutes to justify your treason."
I looked around the room at the directors who had watched my grandfather build this empire from a single warehouse in Cicero.
"I call for a formal motion to terminate Adrian Sterling as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Executive Committee for gross misconduct, effective immediately," I declared.
"I second the motion," Evelyn Shaw said instantly.
"All in favor?" Evelyn asked.

Every single hand at the table shot into the air without a moment's hesitation.
"The motion carries unanimously," Evelyn recorded. "Mr. Sterling, you are relieved of all duties. Security will escort you off the premises."
